What?! Their lyrics suck, simple is an understatement (are they better or worse?) but you like their stuff. I don't get it. Good or bad? Like or not?

I can still like a band that has "low quality" lyrics. Nothing thought provoking or of any substance.

like the music, not the lyrics... duhhh :)

Okay, I missed the obvious... Thanks anyway...

Yeah, who the fuck needs "thought provoking lyrics?" I wanna be thought-provoked, I read the newspaper or turn on PBS. I wanna be entertained, I slip in a CD.
#168902 55 Fri Sep 30 06:47:16 1994 [cout <<] Xenophilosophus [<< "!"] @ Outsider's, Takoma Park, MD, US/MD/MONTGOMERY
Don't get me wrong... I LIKE thought provoking lyrics... just not all of the time.

Most of the time, thought-provoking lyrics are, in actuality, boorish and pretentious and overbearing. As any truly thought-provoked listener of Yes, ELP, Jethro Tull, or Asia will tell you.

Ptetentiousness rulez.

hmm...I dont think I agree with you uncle herb... but then again I have always been a fan of some of the longer stranger Dylan songs (at least the older ones) so I'm sure that that probably says something horrible about my taste *she sighs a heavy sigh*....
#169410 55 Mon Oct 3 19:04:34 1994 The Wanderer @ Blind Man's Bluff, Kirkland, WA, USA
If you want thought-provoking, and you have thought-provoking, it shouldn't be a problem! If you have thought-provoking, and you DON'T want to think, then don't pay any attention to the words. Isn't it that simple?

Megamol - me too. I'm a big fan of Dylan's older stuff. Esp. "Seven Curses" and "Quit Your Low Down Ways" and "Tangled Up in Blue" and of course "Desolation Row".

Megamol, I'd never group Dylan in with those pretentious self-proclaimed "art-rock" bands of the 70s. I don't think he was being pretentious when he wrote some of his great songs -- he was just stoned.
#170032 55 Wed Oct 5 06:46:25 1994 Nathan Bedford Forrest @ Outsider's, Takoma Park, MD, US/MD/MONTGOMERY
I don't recall any of them calling it "art rock" - it was idiot critics with too much free time who did it. Anyway, pretentiousness rules.
#170033 55 Wed Oct 5 16:34:42 1994 Saint Bob @ Outsider's, Takoma Park, MD, US/MD/MONTGOMERY
All the way. I like music to take me airborne.

Regardless of whether they called it that or not, it was obvious they believed it. Anyway, some of it was good. I've got several Yes albums, and though Jon Anderson (not the 1980 presidential candidate) writes lyrics that can have you in tears with laughter, the music is absolutely incredible. But you want pretentious on an absolutely unparallelled level? Check out ELP's rendition of "Pictures at an Exhibition." That is absolutely unlistenable due to its ridiculousness. And they end it by going into a 12-bar blues, as if to say, "we are the bridge between classical and blues." I'm sorry, white boys, can I see your blues license? Thank God for the Sex Pistols...
#170562 55 Thu Oct 6 07:08:44 1994 Nathan Bedford Forrest @ Outsider's, Takoma Park, MD, US/MD/MONTGOMERY
That I agree with. "Pictures" is about as gross an overextension as exists in prog-rock. ELP tottered on the edge of pretense generally, and sometimes it worked great, like most of their first 3 albums... pretty much all of the third one, "Brain Salad Surgery" is excellent. Then they started losing it.
#170564 55 Thu Oct 6 18:09:05 1994 Saint Bob @ Outsider's, Takoma Park, MD, US/MD/MONTGOMERY
ELP and Tarkus are as good as Brain Salad Surgery. Pictures only had one or two things worth listening to on it.

Thanks to cdnow.com, I've got another Faust album. Faust IV... These guys were out there. Recorded in '73. I believe it's their last album.

Siamese Dream is far from new. I've had it....oh....since the middle, or even the beginning, of summer. What's going on?

G.L.B. pretty cool. They play a lot of their stuff on "The End". They also have a song on that Carpenter's tribute (Which is pretty cool). Do you like them Becky?
#172054 55 Sat Oct 15 11:43:14 1994 [Call me a skinhead,] Edit [I call you a pinhead.] @ Blind Man's Bluff, Kirkland, WA, USA
Down at the StoreRoom having beers yesterday. Asked Joe who was recording in the basement. He says Mudhoney. Funny. Would've thought they have their own recording studio out in the San Juans or something, like QueensRyche. I'm going to go out and buy that Buzzcocks Tribute today. It's got a catchy Porn Orchard song.

Yes, I do like Grant Lee Buffalo. My sister wants to go to their show. Hey Edit, Geoff Tate is my friend Heather's Uncle....I feel sooooo bad for her!
