Ovid and Virgil are both Classical because they wrote in the Classical Period. They both wrote for Augustus in fact. And they both wrote in Latin. Past that, they don't have a heck of a lot in common. Ovid wrote for Augustus, but he wrote stuff that infuriated Augustus. Ovid's stuff was pretty steamy for Augustus' tastes, particularly because Augustus was trying to build the Roman population back after the extremely long civil wars prior to his consolidation of power, and his method for this was to keep people's sexual activity within marriage. Virgil was much more down Augustus' alley. He wrote about "Pious" Aeneas and other "noble" subjects. As to kids starting school and literacy problems -- they clearly exist. Not everyone has them, but it is dismaying to see how common they are. I don't see any solutions to that given the current education system. Sorry.

I guess homeschooling seems to be the answer for some families, but what if the parent isn't up to the task themselves? Do the kids wind up being ignorant of things they should know? That's something to be considered as well. Getting back to the classics, have you heard that they just found a new passage in the Sphinx? They're not sure what they will find, but it surehas interesting possibilities.

In homeschooling the kid does a lot of their own directing -- learning what they're interested in since that's what they'll be ready for. The parent's job is less and less instructional as time goes on and becomes more supervisory -- making sure that things don't get too bogged down in one area and that others don't get completely ignored. The Sphynx passage should be good. It should help them understand better the disintegration process so that they may have a better chance of fixing it.

I hope the papers will do a follow-up on it. Sometimes they're really bad at that.
