Lady Non Sequitur
If you have any Borders Bookstores near you, take a look in their (believe it or not) cooking sections. That's where the one near me keeps all its books. I go and browse and take notes... personally, I'd want more than Scott Cunningham for a reference ... get an actual herbalist reference, not a pagan researcher .... (rummaging in c:\ drive for list of herbal books collected from the internet.... will post them soon).
Lady Non Sequitur
Here's one of the books recommended off an herbalism echo I frequent...
From: Mara Drathmore
Speaking of favorite books... I picked up a new one recently that I've just
been DROOLING over...
The Complete Medicinal Herbal
by Penelope Ody
ISBN# 1-564-58-187-X
Dorling Kindersley, Inc. (originally pub. in Italy)
It's not "complete" (only covering around 250 herbs) but it is by far the
best illustrated one I've seen to date. Color pictures for EVERY herb that
that the book covers. Sketches at the top of the page. Latin and common
names. A brief history of the plant. List of character, constituents,
and actions for each plant. Applications and cautions at the bottom of the
page. And the pictures in the middle...<grin> A picture of the plant itself,
and ALSO pictures of it in each of the associated herbal preparation forms
- tincture, ointment, oil, ground in pills, dried, crushed, etc.
Also in the back it's got a list of home remedies for common ailments
as well as a picture how-to for making the various things - oils,
tinctures, ointments, etc.
(I never knew Bladderwrack was a seaweed until I saw the picture...)
If you find this, grab it - it's about $30, but well worth it. Perfect
for the beginning herbalist, since it eliminates 99% of the confusion
of how to do things.

The most basic book I have found to date has to be "The Herb Book" by John Lust. It's written in an easy to use manner and is perfect for begginers.
Ruadh
Another recommendation: there's a book by John Lust called "Herbs" (of course), which is fairly thorough. And cheap. I have two copies, having loaned one out, forgotten who I lent it to, then gotten it back.
Pennyroyal is good against fleas on pets... and, given that it's a mint and has that sharp minty smell, I imagine it's good for headaches and to make you alert in the morning.
Corpus Delectable
Sounds interesting...
Megamol
Another nice basic book is call Herbcraft by Violet Schafer. It is very basic, but has some interesting recipes and other herbcraft in it.
Corpus Delectable
thanks! I found a good herbal book a while ago & it's lent out to a friend now....can't remember who wrote it right off....I recently picked up some Eucalyptus (sp?) oil, I love the scent....going to use a few drops mixed into a few ounces of olive oil & make some nice massage oil/cologne soon...
szNeonx
Sounds spiffy CD.

Corpus - Ever make patchouli?
Elisabeth Perrin
yuck patchouli is nasty, it stinks!
JayDee
bullshit, EP
it is really dependent on who uses it and to what extent
a tiny bit goes a long, looooong way...
Elisabeth Perrin
I make people wearing patchouli leave my presence. It stinks.
JayDee
so does your BUTT
get a patchouli enema

I don't think I'd want to be within ten feet of an herb called "Bladderwrack," thank you very much.

Jaydee!!! hehehehehehheeh (laughing out loud) Personally, I think patchouli stinks in large doses....but in very tiny doses like only a dfrop or two it's ok for a little while. I once made the mistake of burning some as inscence, likme about a teaspoon full....my apt. stunk for hours! I have never made the stuff, but we have some that wee've bought at a local herbal shop...I don't care for it much. For most of my personal oils & perfumes, I like very light woodsey/musty/outdoor-type scents....& some floral & herbal scents. Honeysuckle, clove, Wysteria, & Eucalytous are some of my faves (but not mixed together)
Lord Vader
JayDee, why do you have an obsession with enemas?
Awhile back someone said something about Fennel tasting good ( I think), I heard that Fennel Extract (crushing the leaves for juice?) is rather potent and causes Eppileptic like seizures. Is this true?
JayDee

I'm really an enema bandit
Irrelevant Bosch
and I'm an enigma.
I wish.
Flying Wombat
John Lust's herb book (which is a fairly standard reference) only mentions using fennel root and seed, not the leaves. so I would recommend against using the leaves for anything without finding more specific info.
mainly the seeds, but also the root, are used as stomach and intestinal remedies. the seeds are used for flavoring in sausage, etc. (I have some Italian recipes).
Saint Bob
Bad patchouli stinks. Commercial patchouli stinks. I had some Moroccan patchouli that almost got me high, it smelled so good.
