Yeah, kinda like when I had my 16k clusters on my large hard drive. Fast as all get out, but when I added fidonet with all of its 1 file per message deal, I ran out of space FAST.

Levendis... I'm not sure. The old Epson XT clones that I've seen, however, could hold a baby 286 or a baby 386.
Malcolm Petcher
Levendis, installing a '286 motherboard in an XT box is easy but a tad risky. There's one brass standoff that needs to be removed or moved. Otherwise the power supply shorts out. I learned this the $160 hard way. Looking from the front of the XT case, it's the brass standoff in the middle on the right. Check other standoffs as well, and make sure they don't contact conductors on the the new motherboard. Then you should be in good shape.

NSE: wuarchive.wustl.edu takes a while (2+ days usually) to get updated. I got it from garbo.uwasa.fi.
If you've been monitoring the ibm archives newsgroups (I don't remember what they're called these days), you'll see a discussion on the legality of exporting software that supports encryption. Keith (SIMTEL20) was unwilling (as of yesterday) to put PKZ204C.EXE on SIMTEL20 until the legal issues were cleared up. Someone (from Norway?) called long-distance directly to the PKWare BBS and Timo (or Harri?) put it on Garbo. Finland has no export restriction on encryption technology, so they don't have anything to worry about.
Someone said that PKWARE got permission to distribute their encryption technology outside of the United States.
Timo Salmi stated the logical conclusion that to prevent encryption technology from being imported internationally, either trans-Atlantic lines would need to be broken or the technology must not be available over the phone. If only the lawmakers would realize this...
I wonder if PKZIP will be significant enough to get this encryption law removed from the books.

DOSKEY is OK, but it ought not be necessary to load a TSR just to get aliases and command history. I think it was an afterthought although why it would take the boys at Microsoft that long to come up with the idea beats me. To some extent maybe it's because DOS has always tended to be a solution out looking for a problem. For a while, DOS seemed patterned after VAX DCL. Then Microsoft decided to make it more Unixy, and added piping and redirection. Through most of this time DCL had aliases, sort of, but no command history, and Unix had obtuse aliases and even more obtuse command history. I think in the formative years of MS-DOS the boys at Microsoft were looking around for a good user interface model and there wasn't one. It could be worse. We could be forced to submit every command on a punched card that starts with "//".
Richard Seitz
From my experience, doskey is a poor excuse for using alias's. 4DOS is much better and also CED isn't too bad.

Why do people insist on using PKzip when there's a better compression utility out there? The better program: LHarc released by a japanese programmer named Yoshi. Best of all, it's FREEWARE and MUCH better than PKzip could ever hope to be.............

Joseph Schmoe: What did Nortons's Disk Doctor Report: - Use the automatic tools before trying to do the job manually, if you have mace try ER , or if you have PCTools try DiskFix .... One of these will often repair this problem.
