Duh... if it's .ee or m it definitely *WON'T* be anonymous and further, anyone who inspects their mail files (I sure do) will know that "so-and-so is sending encrypted mail to so-and-so" and will be that much more interested in what it says.
****
Oops... forgot to CTRL-A 5 it.

This is <Anonymous>'s key if you really want it.

ha cute. btw I bet nobody can guess who I am since this room is anonymous and all..
Bookworm
Of course we can't BW.

Hey no fair, you knew... are you like psychic or something... hehehe
:)
Bookworm
Of course! It would be just as hard for you to tell who it was if I was coming from the Used BookStore.

FRuG
But I don't think anyone realize that Anonymous messages contain real names in the message packets. So we are back to square one on truely anonymous messages.
****
Nobody knows who I am either. Nope nope nope. Not at all.

like psychic, or something. of course. };>
GorgonZolA SlinKy
yes we do, lab rat.
Lab Rat
Well it all depends on what you put in for your real name no?
Lab Rat
Like for instance, if you're horribly bored look at the message header for this here message.

The reason for posting messages here vs. private mail (assuming that both are PGP encrypted) is that private mail is less than reliable, although that reliability may have improved since the days when this room was created.
FRuG
no...no silly.. look at the INCOMING packets!... not the msg.base. I wonder if you create a OUTGOING packet with those rooms they might be there too.

I think so!

****
Post the recipient, por favor.
****
Thats what I've been trying to say for like weeks now.. btw they were posted to myself just to annoy people about stupid anonymous messages in an annymous room...
Buster Hymen
Hey, yeah, that's true. I mean, the newspaper and TV news magazine people would still be a bunch of homos, but then the raids on the chat-whackers would be worth it.
Man, I'm getting to hate news magazines. Last night I watched one that was crying over the E. coli 0157:H7 crap in the Jack in the Box hamburgers, making out like they were the saviors of the world for breaking the news that the Agriculture Department wasn't requiring testing for this stuff in order to prevent more kids from dying from eating undercooked fast food hamburgers.
Meanwhile, all this shit happened TWO FUCKING YEARS AGO. Where have they been for two years? Thousands of people a year get sick from E. coli, and they've been sitting on their asses for two years. Now they report this shit, and we're supposed to treat them as heroes of justice? Fuck you, "Turning Point." The only thing that turned last night was my stomach.
****
And they don't just do e-mail because e-mail doesn't always work. At least, it didn't when I created this room.
Lab Rat
Twilight voice twit > You un-anon it and then see that I have never had it as anon.
if you really want 2.6.1 just telnet to net-dist.mit.edu and login as getpgp and follow the instructions like a good little boy.
then you can get the sourcecode and other such exciting things.
Black Wolf
oops
****
e-mail kinda works in an anon room
the recipient gets it, but cannot reply...
rather handy when you want to send a message that you pointedly don't want
a reply to, whatsoever...but, this only works when the someone you send the
message to is aware of that fact, and KNOWS you don't want a reply
sike...
****
Oooh...Ratty's in a baaaaad mood!
doctor doom
i'm feeling a little ill right now myself.
GorgonZolA SlinKy
I dont want 2.6.1 I want people to use 2.3 :)
****
:X
Torch Song
Okay, Lab Rat, it's un-anon'd...and as you can see, I am most emphatically not a boy--good, little, or any other type.
Y'know folks, there's a very easy way to avoid dealing with the annoyance of anonymous rooms--eXclude the damn things and quit trying to make everyone who isn't annoyed by such a small thing bow down and admit that of course they have no brain and should jump any time you whine.
And yes, Torchy is in a fairly foul mood herself.
Torch Song
And no, it wasn't the twit comment that annoyed me. (It doesn't apply to me, and even if the other person logged in here were by some miracle to actually have a chance to log in again, said person could not be called a twit, either. And better not be or I'll take unfriendly steps...)
okay, it's safe to come out of hiding now
{flame off}
rye whiskey
Cogito ergo dim sum.
****
<Big Sigh> Okay, folks, I'm confused here. I will restate this and I would like to have people acknowledge reading it.
The reason this room was originally created was to allow for the passing along of PGP messages between users because mail was not a reliable way to do it at that time. Shortly after its creation it was made anonymous by common consent because it was agreed that that would add a modicum of anonymity as to who was sending messages to whom and would harm nothing.
Anyone who wishes to twiddle the anon bit is free to do so. Anyone who wishes to drop the room is free to do so. Anyone who wishes to sit around bitching about this is free to do so. But I wish that those bitching would explain what was wrong with the reasons behind creating the room and making it anon and why they still carry a room that bothers them so much.
Black Wolf
I like to bitch... and I've explained why I think anoninymity in this room is pointless. Yes Blain you have pointed out very good reasons for it when the room was created. But since then net mail has improved greatly, or at least I havn't run into any problems with it yet...
GorgonZolA SlinKy
torch song is female?
wow.
that caught me off guard
Black Wolf
I have never said the room was pointless, as its a good place to send PGP messages without cluttering up all the other rooms with them... I guess I could move all my PGP messages to the BWN annex room though... ;)
****
yet... operative word
And I *have* run into trouble now & then with it not ending up where it was headed...
****
So kill the room if it's pointless. It wasn't put here to have discussions about its value. It was put here so folks could use it. If no one uses it, then no one will care one way or the other. If you aren't going to use it, then why carry it?
Lab Rat
I'm always in a bad mood.
I think I agreed to anonymous (if I ever did) purely on a test basis, and long ago decided that it need not be anonymous.
And I apologize for making one small one-line comment about this room's anonymous state and staring a big, if not flame-fest, then open-radiator fest.
besides, if it's anonymous how do we know who to yell at when someone posts a pgp message with no recipient...
MontyL
Good point, Line Noize. Yes, there is a slight 'problem' with the net-mail, in that a copy of your message is sent _everywhere_, unless you're sending it to a directly connected node.
****
If it's anonymous you don't shout at someone who posts a pgp message with no recipient -- you ignore them. Their message gets nowhere -- and thus fails to do anything they intended it to do.
Cit mail going everywhere isn't a problem with PGP. It's slightly inefficient, but the reliability factor goes up a lot.
Woo.
Lab Rat
Well in that case I'm going to kill the room after I net.
Mail is a far superior way to make reliable delivery of a PGP message, since by its nature it is inherenty readable and there is no security risk in sending it everywhere.
****
to me anon is not a problem. I don't care who knows who I'm trading pgpmail with, frankly, mostly there's nothing in there that couldn't be printed in the papers I just don't like living my life on a postcard. Ther *are* problems with cit e-mail, but ya know folks, as long as you put in a subject line on your message stating who it's for, who gives a rip whether it's anon or not?
****
Do what you wish to do and nothing else.
