On Internet... there's some rumor about a 'Gold Virus' hidden deep in the code for the un-registered copy of Doom ][. Lots of people warning against
using the unreleased copy of Doom ][..... Wowch!
Goltar
does doom ][ have a virus?
Danger
when i kill that face on level 30, it gives me the characters... hit space and they go through their dying ritual then goes on to the next one.
golden spud
I heard about that virus too... I guess F-Prot can detect it, but you can't clean it yet unless you delete the file(s) infected, or something along those lines.

Anyone know where Doom is from?

Hello,
I was the one that had first found out about the virus and updated
everyone on IRC. I have been playing with the Doom2.wad to find any
other info. I de-compiled the wad and found some more evidence of a
virus in the PIR8 version. NOT the real version when it comes out. THe
following source was pieced together:
Call GetDate
}
GetDate
{
GetSysDate(xy$)
x = 10<
If xy$ = "10-10-94" or "10-x-94" then DelDrive;
}
<some Code snipped>
DelDrive
}
rmDir$(CurDir%)
FormatD(CurDrv!)
printf("Dooms Day!");
end;
}
Ack! I would delete your Pir8 copys of doom if I were you!!
For more info I have on the virus feel free to E-Mail me.
p.s. It looks as if iD didnt put it in. So buy those REAL Doom 2's!

A KoV URGENT NOTICE!!
Dangerous time bomb has been found in many copies of Doom 2!
Decompiling DOOM2.WAD reveals a hidden subroutine to format
your hard drive if you run Doom 2 after October 10, 1994!
This is not a joke! All Doom 2 players face a serious risk!
Yes it's true. After finding a post on alt.games.doom
with a warning about a "virus" in Doom 2, I decided to test
the author's hypothesis about a built-in trojan. (A copy of
that post has been included with this release. It is called
DM2VIRUS.TXT) Onslaught and I came up with a plan to find out
if this was true. He renamed his FORMAT.COM to something else
and set the date on his computer to 10-11-94. Then he tried
to run Doom 2. As I suspected, it dropped him back to DOS
after giving him an error "file missing." We can only assume
that the "missing file" was FORMAT.COM.
While this is a dangerous "virus" of sorts, it is not
the end of the world. Simply rename your FORMAT.COM to
something else, and nothing will happen to you.
After trying to find FORMAT.COM for a second time,
however, Doom 2 will simply abort the formatting attempt and
proceed to delete the contents of your Doom 2 directory. This
second aspect of the virus can be overcome by using a program
like the Norton Utilities to place Deletion Protection on the
directory. This has all been verified by both myself and
Onslaught, before I decided to release this warning.
If you think that this is some kind of a hoax, try
reproducing the experiment Onslaught and I set up. You will
most likely get the same error "file missing." And if you
don't get some kind of deletion protection for your Doom 2
directory, you'll find out that it's missing soon after.
Since we're not sure which groups' releases of Doom 2
contain this trojan, we can only advise you to take extra
care when the month of October rolls around.
For more information, write to the author of the
enclosed post, DM2VIRUS.TXT.

ATTENTION !!!
The message that there is a Virus in D00M ][ is true !!!!
I found an abnormal TSR installed while playing DOOM ][. it takes
about 2K of memory and runs a little check programm that searches
especially for User and systemfiles of certain BBS Programms.
I found it again after running my version of PCBoard
(Hey, call me ! Shadowrunners Inn !) and it turned out to be infected,
because the same TSR appeared. Seems like the
programmer wanted to make sum trouble to the scene ...
Way to remove it : Use F-Prot , use heuristics scan ... and ... pray ...

Why The Doom 2 Virus Is Fake
The Doom 2 Virus IS A Fake! My Stupid Friend Set His Date To
Every Day In October, 1994 And Ran Doom 2. NOTHING HAPPENED! Wow! Also, In The
Three Files That Told About It, One Said It Was A Virus, Another Said It Was
A TSR And The Last Said It Was A Set Of Commands! Pirate Community, Worry Not
If You Have Doom 2!
Have A Nice Day.
John
Why CD-ROM for a 15-meg game? Because a CD costs five bucks to manufacture. Disks cost more.
MontyL
Now there's a neat thing to do... Piss a few folks off.
Elisabeth Perrin
A CD-ROM costs much less than 5 bucks to manufacture. Especially in quantity.
cochese
Yeah, doom was designed by three guys in Mesquite, Tx.
John
Can WAD files include that fancy script language? Isn't it funny how it goes from something like BASIC at the beginning to something like C at the end?
Rubik's Cube
A CD costs approximately 10 cents to manufacture in large quantities. The information on the CD is obviously worth much more than 10 cents. (or at least we hope so)
Cave Bear
I hear that Microsoft is working on a Windows version of Doom to be released with Windows '95. That alone is worth the price of the gui. :)
johnboy
Doom I and II god mode code: IDDQD, Weapons code: IDKFA, to expand map aand locate enemies hit tab to see the map, enter IDOT twice, youll see the map expand. All of these codes are to be entered while playing the game.
John Shannon
I doubt Microsoft is working on it. I know ID is, though.
Cave Bear
Well I'm off to computer city to go pick up doom 2 and see for myself.
Cave Bear
I'm stuck in level 2/doom2 already. :) There's a secret/hidden place I can't seem to find to move on
Cave Bear
Thanks johnboy. I found it, tried it and didn't like it. I'm glad it's toggable so that I can turn it off. Doom II is a lot of fun.
Since the doom engine on II is similar to the registered Doom1, anyone know if generic wads can be played or run?
Alpha Wolf
or iddt whilst looking on the map.... :)
do it again and you see all of the objects.
wow.
Cave Bear
Geez, that Doom2 is a tough one. I'm stuck at level 8: Tricks and Traps. I've cleared everything out and even picked up the BFG6000 but I can't finish the level because the exit platforms that go at a 90 degree turn drop the moment you step on them leaving you in the ooze to fry each time. I got as far as the exit door but waiting for it to open only lets you sink to your death anyway. Any hints anyone?
John
Run faster. I did it.
Dimwit Flathead
Use God mode? That's all I can figger...I only got to level 3 or so, on someone else's 'puter, with god mode on, punching everything. Not efficient, but fun watching things reduced to jelly with a single punch! ;}
Wolfgang
There is no virus with Doom2.
kid kangaroo
better use the cheat codes... at least the map anyway.. that is the best way to play.... invincible!
ShadowStalker
idbehold is a great little code for both doom I and ][ .. lets you toggle liteamp, and the map (map being like you picked up a map device, areas where you still haven't been are shown in gray.. much more helpful in my opinion than iddt...)
Wolfgang
Better grfx, faster screen mapping, better monsters... to the undoomeducated eye, not a hell of a lot. But it's worth getting.
John
I don't understand what you mean about a new low-HP creature for each weapon.
Cave Bear
I'm in the suburbs right now and the poop hit the fan for a minute there, I had to run like hell broke loose for a while until I could selectively trap those things and rock their world. Excellent game.
Painted Fox
Well, iddt twice is kind of neat.... Shows objects and monsters. Comes in handy sometimes..
Wolfgang
He may have meant "Low Hit-Point", meaning either very easy or very hard to kill.
I have a list of all the secrets, their coordinates and pixel mapping codes, of Doom ][ is anyone is interested.
And of course, ya'll know to load setup.exe and hit F1 at the main menu to warp to any level, turn off/on monsters, and regeneration options.
Cave Bear
Hey Wolfgang, I'm in level 17 now and can't find the exit. Where is that danged thing?
Wolfgang
I'll upload that file tomorrow, Joe. Good luck in the meantime. :)
Keric
Does Doom ][ support the old WAD files? There's a shareware CD out that has over 350 WAD files on it for only $19.95. But will they work with the new Doom?
Edit
I heard an interview with some of the id guys on NPR last week.
They said there will never be a Doom 3. There will be a Doom
movie, though. Ids new game will be called Quake.
I might go out an buy Doom 2 today. Can't decide.
Wolfgang
Keric -- Not at this point in time, but people are working on patches and ways to use the Doom I's .WAD files with Doom ][. I have no doubt it's possible.
golden spud
Whew... 350 WAD files for $20!!!! That's almost as good as 1500 MODs and 600 MIDIs for $15!
orion
hello if anyone is intersed i have about 50+ megs of doom wad files...plus two doom cad programs and several cheats
John
In Doom II, those skeletons shoot some fireballs that move straight, but some that home in on you. Using IDDT, IDDT, you can track these fireballs as they home in on you! If you're good, you can keep one fireball in pursuit, while another joins it. Fun, fun, fun.
Greg Voss
i hope you aint stupid john at least doom ][ has better graphics and speech
like mortal kombat (R) mortal kombat ][ (R) they are comming out with a 64 bit
system this fall i think.
Black Wolf
cool! I'll have to try that out...
Chewbacca
I used to have DOOM but my asshole brother always screws with the computer and now it's gone.
Blubard
I've picked up some interesting modifications on the graphics. Por hangs some sexy graphicss on the walls and doors. And another changes the seargants into Barney the dinosaur. I got the adult version tooo workk, but I'm still trrrrying to get Barney to appear. Caaan hardly wait. I'm sharpening my chainsaw.
Purple People Eater
Wolfgang: EPIC MEGAGAMES RULE!!!!!!!
The Wanderer
The last file I used to turn those pink aliens to Barney sucked pretty badly...Not worth it at all...
Wolfgang
Purple: pahaha..
Solitaire
I got some simpson's patches... Grfx are all too big though, they get annoying, and some of the objects block your vision too much. I like the aliens patches, those are cool.
