I heard about that virus too... I guess F-Prot can detect it, but you can't clean it yet unless you delete the file(s) infected, or something along those lines.

I have been playing with the Doom2.wad to find any other info. I de-compiled the wad and found some more evidence of a virus in the PIR8 version. NOT the real version when it comes out. THe following source was pieced together: Call GetDate } GetDate { GetSysDate(xy$) x = 10< If xy$ = "10-10-94" or "10-x-94" then DelDrive; } <some Code snipped> DelDrive } rmDir$(CurDir%) FormatD(CurDrv!) printf("Dooms Day!"); end; } Ack! I would delete your Pir8 copys of doom if I were you!! For more info I have on the virus feel free to E-Mail me. p.s. It looks as if iD didnt put it in. A KoV URGENT NOTICE!! Dangerous time bomb has been found in many copies of Doom 2! Decompiling DOOM2.WAD reveals a hidden subroutine to format your hard drive if you run Doom 2 after October 10, 1994! This is not a joke! All Doom 2 players face a serious risk! Yes it's true. After finding a post on alt.games.doom with a warning about a "virus" in Doom 2, I decided to test the author's hypothesis about a built-in trojan. (A copy of that post has been included with this release. It is called DM2VIRUS.TXT) Onslaught and I came up with a plan to find out if this was true. He renamed his FORMAT.COM to something else and set the date on his computer to 10-11-94. Then he tried to run Doom 2. As I suspected, it dropped him back to DOS after giving him an error "file missing." We can only assume that the "missing file" was FORMAT.COM. While this is a dangerous "virus" of sorts, it is not the end of the world. Simply rename your FORMAT.COM to something else, and nothing will happen to you. After trying to find FORMAT.COM for a second time, however, Doom 2 will simply abort the formatting attempt and proceed to delete the contents of your Doom 2 directory. This second aspect of the virus can be overcome by using a program like the Norton Utilities to place Deletion Protection on the directory. This has all been verified by both myself and Onslaught, before I decided to release this warning. If you think that this is some kind of a hoax, try reproducing the experiment Onslaught and I set up. You will most likely get the same error "file missing." And if you don't get some kind of deletion protection for your Doom 2 directory, you'll find out that it's missing soon after. Since we're not sure which groups' releases of Doom 2 contain this trojan, we can only advise you to take extra care when the month of October rolls around. For more information, write to the author of the enclosed post, DM2VIRUS.TXT. Don't forget to read NEWS0925.KOV The following BBS's are either drop points for KoV releases or actual "official" distribution sites (meaning the sysops actually take the time to separate KoV files from the normal uploads and put them in their own area). ATTENTION !!! The message that there is a Virus in D00M ][ is true !!!! I found an abnormal TSR installed while playing DOOM ][. it takes about 2K of memory and runs a little check programm that searches especially for User and systemfiles of certain BBS Programms. I found it again after running my version of PCBoard (Hey, call me ! Shadowrunners Inn !) and it turned out to be infected, because the same TSR appeared. Seems like the programmer wanted to make sum trouble to the scene ... Way to remove it : Use F-Prot , use heuristics scan ... and ... pray ... Why CD-ROM for a 15-meg game? Because a CD costs five bucks to manufacture. Disks cost more.

Geez, that Doom2 is a tough one. I'm stuck at level 8: Tricks and Traps. I've cleared everything out and even picked up the BFG6000 but I can't finish the level because the exit platforms that go at a 90 degree turn drop the moment you step on them leaving you in the ooze to fry each time. I got as far as the exit door but waiting for it to open only lets you sink to your death anyway. Any hints anyone?

idbehold is a great little code for both doom I and ][ .. lets you toggle liteamp, and the map (map being like you picked up a map device, areas where you still haven't been are shown in gray.. much more helpful in my opinion than iddt...)

In Doom II, those skeletons shoot some fireballs that move straight, but some that home in on you. Using IDDT, IDDT, you can track these fireballs as they home in on you! If you're good, you can keep one fireball in pursuit, while another joins it. Fun, fun, fun.
