he's pretty cool. and harvard don't mean dip.
#1215 49 Wed Jan 8 15:46:19 1992 Isis
he's still my idol, I want to be on his good side & do REALLY well when I take his class, so he will write me a good recomendation, in case I decide to apply there. (they have THE BEST anthropology dpt., but it's unlikely that they will accept me for the first 4 years, i'll have to wait until grad. school probably.)
#1226 49 Wed Jan 8 15:58:05 1992 [everyday, everyday] Spur [i start to ooze.]
why is it so unlikely? if you think you'll do as well as you will, then they probably will accept you. but i doubt if you could afford it (unless your grandma pays for it)
#1234 49 Wed Jan 8 18:18:29 1992 Isis
there are loans & stuff...I won't be high enought up in my class percentage, or have enough leadership roles anyway, I'll apply for the heck of it, but I don't expect to get in, and even if I do, another college will probably OFFER me enough money, to make it stupid to go there.

Sure...why not, though? Oh, I do well in his class too, and I brownnose often, but that still doesn't mean that it isn't bullshit!
#1264 49 Wed Jan 8 19:24:59 1992 Isis
he's nice though, I've never had him, so I can't evaluate his mental ability, but he's read us K.b. questions before, and I've had small conversations with him, he SEEMS intelligent enough...although that thing about Columbus is a little odd.
#1277 49 Wed Jan 8 19:48:07 1992 [everyday, everyday] Spur [i start to ooze.]
what thing about columbus? and i'd bet you mr grant would hate Buchanan for president. Grant is liberal (like all intelligent people are). :) And isis, if you get 1500 on your SAT's, you'll be able to go just about anywhere. But even with scholarships and loans, can you afford 20,000 a year to go to harvard? i think not.
#1284 49 Wed Jan 8 19:59:14 1992 Isis
I don't expect a 1500 (although I did do that good on the 1986 copy that the councilers gave to us, I spent half a day taking it, just like it was the real thing), I wouldn't be supprised if I got 1300, I don't think I'll do any worse than that though. It'll depend a lot on how I feel that day (sickness seems to affect my ability to think A LOT)
#1297 49 Wed Jan 8 20:43:14 1992 [everyday, everyday] Spur [i start to ooze.]

OK, maybe I shouldn't knock him so much, but he really isn't very competant as a teacher, yet. All teachers are, though...not competant at first that is.
#1403 49 Thu Jan 9 19:15:12 1992 [everyday, everyday] Spur [i start to ooze.]

The biggest problem with education today is that parents are not being held responsible for the actions of their children. The next biggest screw up is that they stopped teaching citizenship (learning how to get along in life). The next biggest problem is that the U.S. school system is using methods of teaching that have been known to be terrible since the mid fifties, and they refuse to change.

In the whole time I've been in school, I've only had 3 teachers who really use up to date teaching techniques. The rest are just "read pages xx-xx and answer the questions on page xx, due monday" Most teachers have stopped carring long ago. There's not enough money in the job for the ammount of work needed to teach really well.
#909 49 Thu Feb 6 01:13:49 1992 [all] Nique [woman] @ Columbia Crest BBS, Olympia, US 206 786 9248
Scorpion, part of the reason that teachers don't use "up-to-date techniques" is that their hands are tied by the administration. Creativity is actively discouraged in public schools.

My elementry had an awful gifted program, it was only good my 2nd grade year (kinda), but even then it upset parents of the "nongifted" kids that we got something special, so it was downgraded greatly, and finally done away with, but it came back for 6th graders only, but then they let about half the kids in the grade in, so it really wasn't very good, and what we did was really pointless.

Like REACH at Jefferson. The state only gives enough funds for gifted programs for the top 1% of the students, but at Jefferson, they had extra money comming in so they had the top 5% in teh program. My eighth grade year, I had Mrs. Charles, who taught the P.A.T.S. program, for a block teacher. I also went to REACH that year. When you compared what Mrs. Charles was doing to what the reach teacher was doing, it was pittiful. The regular class was doing more learning and having more fun than the people in REACH. The regular class was comparing West Side Story to Romeo and Juilet and then acting out parts of West Side Story. In REACH, we were drawing a map of a country that we designed. The criteria for the country was so tight that all you could od was chose a name for your country and decide where it would be...

#917 49 Wed Feb 12 23:39:24 1992 Isis @ Columbia Crest BBS, Olympia, US 206 786 9248
My fourth grade year all we did was put out a really lame school paper, and mess with the apples in the keyboarding lab...in 2nd grade they started to teach us the logic stuff & begining programming (not that I remember any of it, it was basic anyway though) in 4th we used a lame-o word processor and played typing games...in 2nd grade we made an aquarium out of an apple juice jar & observed it (they all died in the end anyway...) in 6th we tried to see who could build the tallest tooth-pick tower in 30 mins. but it sucked anyway becuase my regular teacher was so bad in 2nd, she couldn't teach math worth sh*t & I never got to work on reading because she made me help the average kids so she could focus on the dumb ones during workbook time. I blame the Montesano school district for me being only "above average" now, I started out rad...it was my own fault too though...when I did the Jr. high reading stuff in 4th grade then in 6th grade had to do normal stuff because the teacher didn't have better matterials, does it take much wondering why I'm so lazy now?

I went through a lot of the same, Isis. I never did ANY homework in high school except an occasional essay. I simply read the chapter in the 10 minutes before the test and I always got A's on the tests. The math homework was so simple I did it during the 5 minute breaks between classes. I had no challenges at all.

well, english homework, vocab stuff and book reports, are busy work, because you cna learn all you need to know about english by reading, but math is different, you can't learn about math just by reading the math book and never doing any problems, because the math books aren't laid out that way. they are laid out so you need to practice the concepts to be able to do more advanced concepts

I DISAGREE about English entirely. I do VERY well at it, but I still learn something every day. I might learn how to do the math problem after trying 2 or 3 problems. The teacher assigned 45. Busy work. I don't know what king of English you people have, but what I do in my class is read books and short stories, poems and plays, and discuss what we read. The only busy work we have is vocabulary. She has us write essays very rarely. I guess you all know i'm biased now, right? :)

You have the basics of ESSAYS down pat. not the english language. Like, my english teacher has been stuck on combining curnal setences for about a month now... it's pathetic, we all figured out all of what she was teaching in the first week... I think she just ran out of things to do... It's a time filler...

#1254 49 Sun Feb 16 16:25:48 1992 Isis @ Columbia Crest BBS, Olympia, US 206 786 9248
Actually writing esays wouldn't be so bad, if we could actually learn something. The topics we're given are basicly very superficial, no depth, and if you try to find depth you discover it's impossible because then you would be changing the essay topic. Math homework isn't that necessary, I don't do most of it & when i do I don't really do the problems, but that's because math comes really easily so I don't need a lot of practice to understand something usually, and when I do, I take the iniciative to learn it myself & work out how ever many problems I need to learn it. Busy work in a forign language is okay, if it's good busy work, but the french book we have this year has pointless assignments that you could do without even knowing basic french, just plugging in words that they tell you to. Science is the best class though, (work wise), almost none of it is pointless, or just "busy work", you learn something from almost everything (except maybe repetive parts of labs)

stderr> it is easy to run out of things to do in english when none of your teachers are original thinkers, my current teacher just takes it straight from the book, we've read Julius Caesar and Medea so far, and it wouldn't be that bad if we could do an interesting project with it, not answer the discussion questions and write a four-paragraph essay on the composition question

So, how about this Tyson case? What does everyone think? Some people are actually saying that he was convicted because he was Black. Of course the 18 year beauty queen was also Black. And, of course, they say, William Kennedy Smith was White and he got off. Well, the woman in that case was also White. So, I guess we can come to the conclusion that Blacks treat Black women better than Whites treat White women..... Yea, THAT makes logical sense....

Yup. But it isn't just english teachers. Teachers are taught to convey facts, very few know the difference between a fact and a concept...and fewer know how to convey concepts. Nouns, verbs...ect, read this and write about it. Boreing...no creativity. My first englich class with creativity was english 102 in college. abou aboutt aa Sorry about the last bit of junk. I have no idea why teachers are not taught to teach people "to learn" rather than to spout facts.

geez. i wanted to take both comparitive anatommy, and bio-ethics... but iguess i'll have to wait til next year, or my senior year. Bio-ethics sounds REALLY interesting. Mr. Nadleson was explaining it to our advisory. I think one of the experiments was to see if they could freeze dry a living goldfish, and bring it back to life.

far too many sophomores want to take comp. anat, and most of them haven't even taken biology, like trevor rowe, jim phillips, and i think i talked sam havens out of it, but he might do it. a couple of seniors in my advanced science class aren't going to take it because it'll be so hard, (and because so many sophomores want to take it)

I think sam did sign up for it...yeah it was him...he's the only one of the three you mentioned that I talk to...why take a class like that if you don't know diddly about biology, it seems like a waste...and it'll slow the rest of the class down when you ask stupid questions about dna or something, that everyone else knows...the only way I can see doing it is if you're a senior and can't wait until after biology, and you want to take a chalenging course, then it would make sense...
