Poor thing. Well, here's the update. Forget the SNES and the 2nd Edition AD&D stuff. Add the following:
Shadowrun: Sprawl Sites, Dragon Hunt, and Bottled Demon. Shadowrun adventures. $7 each (actual value unknown)
All of the above (minus SNES and 2nd Edition AD&D) go on sale NOW. I will accept payment plans, and cash or cheques. All prices are negotialble. Interested parites may call at 438-3514 or 456-6660 if busy.
I no longer need the money as desperatly, as one of Mercedes Lackey's co-authors is loaning me the money to go. Yippie!!
Darkwing Duck
Well, Audin, it just showed you a major problem with your cit, I might have acutakky helped you in the long run.
Darkwing Duck
What did I do that was that bad? Besides screwing with Audin's dir's?
Roya
Don't ask me!
James T Kirk
Screwing with my dir's is enough. And i learned earler tonight, that one of your "screwings" crashed my board for about 3 hours a few nights ago.
You had opened a dir room into the a: drive, an a: drive in which there wasen't a disk. So, when someone (chequtia) wen't into that room, it looked on a: and got an "Not Ready Read Error" from dos. in other words, freesing up my computer for a few hours.
Darkwing Duck
Well, I don't care!
Roya
Neither do I!! (What are you talking about?)
Shane
I smell some TWITTING.
Roya
Ididn'tdoitnobodysawmedoityoucan'tproveanything...
James T Kirk
HA! Thin is, it woulda never happened if you haden;'t be screwing.
Spur
I saw Roya. She did it. What did she do?
James T Kirk
I don't know... But Roya did it!
James T Kirk
Roya, I'll bet you've got that album...
Roya Naini
WHat album? WHat the HELL?
Spur
MI think he means, the Simpsons sing the Blues.
Roya Naini
Oh..no..I don't have it...I wanted to get it though...but, it's just antoher way to attract attention to it....I'm allready a fan..I don't need that kinda stuff..I've allready got my magazine..
Spur
Your collection won't be complete withouth "the sipsons sing the blues"...
Roya
They're coming out with some more CD's too....I don't think I'll get any of them....THe simpson's are a cartoon, not a band...
Roya
OH SHOOT...EXCUSE ME...did I say "cartoon"? I MEANT show..I don't consider the Simpsons a cartoon..it's too good for that....Matt Groening says he as an Emmy or somehting in Cartoons for the Simpson's, but he puts it up WAY high on a shelf in his house, so people can't tell if its for cartooning, or for a regular show....
Spur
Groenig is cool. He never read any medical journals inhis life.
Shane
do you know that for a FACT?
Spur
Yes, I asked him.
Roya
Spur...shut the heck up....The ONLY reason, that I had to read them, was for a Biology project...Maybe if you had even bothered to TAKE Biology, you would see....by the way, it also helps ilf youjust read the abstract, and not worry about getting into details with the rest of the article....JAMA is a good one with LOT"s of abstracts! Heh,heh...
Spur
God, its easy to piss her off...
bill
How come these rooms have nothing to do with what's being talked about in them? How Come? w/ Al Wallace. Do you remember? He's dead now. Oh well.
Roya
There all afraid of being TOPIC POLICE GEEKS...haven't I said that a million times before? why does everybody keep asking? Why am I doing this...why me? I hate you all....Neat-o geeks...wow.....Happy Spur? I am NOT P.O.'d.....Can't you tell when I'm joking? I guess it's funny to see people respond, after I've said a really mad-looking comment.....
Spur
Oh god, just cause you never even leave the house...
Roya
You are a geek....
Spur
Eat yourself.
Shane
Impossible. I've tried.
Spur
No, you jut have to be particularly flexible. And being female helps too.
Shane
well, they would have to reach further.
Spur
Flexible, like I said.
Lightning
Rubles?
Italian Stallion
they might be worth alot...as archeological finds.

One of the boards I sold to the guy a few months back new. He is now upgrading to a 386SX-25 w/ 4meg. The other guy is doing the same but he's got a system I haven't seen yet. I also have a 40meg MFM drive with 16bit controller.
Italian Stallion
Is that the kinda 40MEG HD that would work in a 386sx that currently uses a Seagate? (Same Size) I think I have an extra controller port (or whatever they're called)
Spur
i'll give you three bucks then.

Chris the Shaych
$5. Take it or leave it.
Captain James T Kirk
I knew SOMEONE would make a comment like that...
Pat Jankowiak
Carol Mann, try locating the local STEELCASE (brand) office furniture dealer. thats real good stuff.
Malcolm Petcher
LaD, you can't beat a new 40 meg IDE, $200 or less. Best you'll do on the used market is an ST225 or 238 for $50-$75, and if it's not noisy it'll get that way.
chris masters
Carol, techline available @ Eurway furniture at Alpha & Dallas tollway is modular, and very attractive.
Chuck Knight
Carol...try the Children's Benefit Store... It's on Central, but they're having a warehouse sale over on Inwood at the moment. They usually have the modular work stations for sale, and they're the heavy duty, really nice ones you'll find in open air offices...

Malcolm: Here, here! I had an old ST250R(I know ancient) 40meg that went from pretty quiet to HEY I AM HERE AND WORKING pretty quick.
Malcolm Petcher
ST251's are the worst in the world. Seem like a good deal at first, but what you get is three platters driven by the same motor and head actuator as the two platter ST225/238 (same mechanics.) It's just a race as to whether you get the freight train sound or stiction first. Even a 238 outlasts a 251. These IDE's are probably too new for me to declare them wonderful, not enough history yet, but with the light bearing load and short actuator throw, I expect them to be really reliable drives. Time will tell.
Jonathan McGirr
I would say how long I have had my 251 working, but it would probably crater when I did. So I won't.
LaDzhaRi
Okay, Im really getting seroius about selling my machine here, I still have to get a battery and a mono VGA monitor, BUT:
12Mhz 286 w/1 meg ram
2 360K 5.25" drives
IO board, 2 ser 1 par 1 game
130meg IDE 16ms ST1144A 3.5" HD
8-slots blah blah blah
decent keyboard 101-key I beleive
normal AT case.
mono VGA monitor

lots of software on the HD
maybe 2400 baud Supra external modem
How much is all of this worth? It's been running Cyberlink for ove r a year so it's reliable enough.. And yes, it would all be put together nicely and neatly.

Some slime ball in the Rat Shack sold this setup to a disabled women about six months ago at $1771. She paid about $59 per month and still owes about $1720. (She's paying about 18 percent interest) Now they claim it's worth $1300. Any guesses on what they've been smokin'?
Captain James T Kirk
God, rip off...
IT's tandy 16 color graphics... BTW... (not much better... but, with the right software, it's EGA..)
stderr
Anyone care to take a guess and what she could get for that Tandy?
Steve Baxter
Lucas,
I could sure use it. Do you have a price in mind?
stderr>
That should be considered stealing. At the very least it's mis-representing a product. I'd expect she could get $500 for it with a lot of advertising and a lot of work to find a person who uses Tandy. Otherwise, maybe $400 on the open market.
I'd offer around $300 for it depending on the printer.
Can she give it back?
Nicodemus
I'd say probably about $500 if she's lucky. I didn't Rat Shack was that low. gezzz.

Wanted: parts for first generation Mazda Rx-7: 1982 distributor, 1985 GSL-SE limited slip rear diff and disc brakes, 85 GSL-SE wheels, aftermarket shocks, springs and swaybars, 12A street header, 12A Weber, Mikuni, or Dellorto intake with carb and linkage, 79-80 console & ashtray, aftermarket high back racing seat for use with 5 point harness, a five point harness, and a roll cage.
stderr
That price was suppose to be a sale. So everyone thinks from $300-500? I told her $700, but I was trying to be nice.
Dr. Technical
Sad to say, it's not worth any $700.00. When will they ever learn?

It can be upgraded to 65 users on line (all at the same time) several games and utilities can be added for additional fees from the program author or vendors. The program comes complete with manual, disk, and vendor information of games and utilities. Asking $35.00 obo.
Ron House
500 would be a little high... 350 to 400 would probably go, though.
Malcolm Petcher
A few months ago I sold a 10 MHz 286 machine with 1 meg memory, 40 meg hard drive, 5.25" and 3.5" drives, and a CGA for $600. Had a printer been included I probably could have gotten $750 or better. If that Tandy machine is 100% IBM compatible, I'd say $700 is not completely out of line. However, that only counts for a customer who wants a turnkey system. People who don't mind shopping around and buying pieces at various places could put together a '386SX system with all that same stuff plus VGA for the same or little more.
Ron House
Looks like someone is fixing to do a little racing.... or gonna storm the Federal Reserve! ;-)
Bruce
I agree, Radio Shack slime balls. She should take it back, saying she can nolonger meet the monthly payments and see what value they would give it, and maybe this way she could cut her losses. Even if Rat Shack deducted $400 for its use, it still might be a better deal.

Let Rat Shack repo it and then it is there problem getting rid of a used system.
With the money she saves on 18% interest she can probably get a real system. (I'd buy direct from big blue before I'd take a Tandy as a gift. (And I am a die hard Apple ][ user.))

I'm with Bruce. Take the Tandy back, and default on the payments. These days $1700 buys a hell of a machine, not some proprietry piece of s#@t
Chuck Knight
STDERR> Have her advertise in the paper, to sell that computer. She'll get more for it, that way...someone will see Tandy, think name brand (since it is!!), and buy it for his kid to learn on. It is, after all, a halfway decent system to start with. Even if it was ridiculously overpriced...

Ron, the monitor is a Magnavox Professional VGA Color Monitor (that's what is says on the front) probably .31 pitch. Works fine...

Chuck: Most people are not going to buy something from the newspaper without asking someone who knows about what they are buying. Radio Shaft has a history of Ly'in to the customers. Call the credit bureau for Radio Shack, explain that you can no longer make the payments, and tell them to pick up the machine. Then, Stderr, help her find a REAL machine, and if you can't, I would be more than happy to look around for her as well. And I imagine there are several others on this board who feel the same.
Captain James T Kirk
well, the Tandy people arn't worth 700 eather...

Jon, still trying to build that rx-7 into something eh? :-) Speaking of things for sale, I had a <real> Ferrari F-40 pull into the station last week. This guys other car is a Cobra 427 (again, not a replica). Oh yes, neither is for sale, but just had to tell someone about it :-)
Don't Ask
Joe Carrasquilo: I might be interested in your Major BBS package for a friend of mine.... leave me email on the net...
Malcolm Petcher
No, you can't just default on payments without ruining your credit, and you don't call the credit bureau about such problems - they just keep records, they're not responsible for the actual debts or collateral. If she can substantiate that she got rooked, she might be able to take it to small claims court. That's unlikely, though. If she agreed on the price of the machine and the installment terms, and if the machine functions as it was represented to function, there are no grounds for a suit. The fact that the system was overpriced, and the fact that typical pricing for similar systems has been reduced even more in ensuing months, are both completely immaterial. When you sign on the dotted line you make a commitment. You can't just go cry to somebody later and get the whole thing eliminated.
Greg Hanson
Maher, a REAL Cobra? What color was it? I remember a girlfriend's father that had one. He only took it out of the garage to handwash and drive around the block at about 90 mph. Then back into the garage. What a car! BTW, it was candy-apple red.

Jonathan McGirr
Has it been over 90 days??? And Malcolm: I agree about the credit, but the poor lady says she wants out of it. Didn't say she wanted out of it clean... :}
Joe Carrasquillo
I think you guys are giving her the wrong advice. Pay for the darn thing, try to sell it for as much as possible and with the money, either pay it off completely or buy a comprably priced but better system. Being tagged with bad credit can not do the Lady any good what-so-ever. She needs to maintain a good, clear credit ratings. I think she would be wiser to both pay and admit to a learned lesson for future reference. (shame on you guys!)

Well as for the MAJORBBS by GALICTICOMM, it is a great package. I am runing the FILE TRANSFER EDITION at this time and started out with the STANDARD EDITION. If you buy a copy from an individual, be sure to get all the docs and to notify Galaticomm of your purchase. If you buy from them direct, you will get their newsletters, upgrades, factroy support bullitens, ect.. I don't know what their policy for support on resold versions of the software.

Yeah, maher... bought it with a bad engine, bad trans, and good body and glass for $150. Bought a used 82 engine for $600, bought a used Racing Beat Holley 4bbl kit for $300, am having the broken shift fork replaced in the tranny for $80 (should be ready tomorrow), sent off $415 to Racing Beat yesterday for header, presilencer, and muffler. Next paycheck goes for a clutch disk and pressure plate. Next four paychecks after that go for Eibach springs and some brand of shocks. Next two paychecks (glad i get paid weekly) go for Suspension Techniques sway bars. After that I'll get some wheels and tires. In the mean time tips will pay for odd and ends like axle bearings, brake pad & shoes (oem type.. will go to race if I have problems later), street tires, etc...
Hard to believe I've spent almost $2000 already on something I've only driven 7/10 of a mile!

You know, Malcolm, I bet all those nice people who are recommending that the lady dump on Radio Shack by reneging on her agreement are the same type of people who tell lawyer jokes and make comments about their integrity. Seems to me that the advice is not only dishonest, it's potentially harmful since Radio Shack (should they choose to do so) could report the default to the credit bureau and .... there goes her credit.
It's amazing to me how fundamentally dishonest some people are -- I suppose they think that since it's a "big corporation" it's OK to lie, cheat, and/or steal, but to me, a liar/cheater/thief is a liar/cheater/thier regardless of who's the victim.
Making a new deal with Radio Shack (say a trade-in or merely asking them to take it back and make allowances on the amount due) is certainly OK -- I'm not suggesting that the lady ought not go back to RS and ask for assistance. It's certainly possible that they'd help out.... at least, that would be honest, something some folks apparently tend to think isn't important.
Cheers................................ c h u c k

About the Tandy computer mess....: She claims she doesn't have the money to pay for it. She can't even pay the interest right now. (She said she even had a friend pay her electric bill this month) If she can only get $400-600 for the thing, she'll still owe at least $1100. I think she pretty much has to let them take it back although they say they won't let her off any of the money owned.
Clearly there's no chance she'll be getting a good system in the near term. This is too bad because it sounds like she wanted to learn CAD and other design related work. (The Tandy salesman said the system would work with AutoCAD. Even ignoring the fact that 286-10 and AutoCAD is a joke, it would HAVE to have a co-processor to work that way. I wonder if it does....)
Maybe we could all call up Tandy and complain for her.....
Dernhelm
There is no reason that the lady should be forced to pay through the nose for a bad computer if she can return it and have her credit record intact.

Post the numbers of both the store that sold the Tandy and Tandy's corporate office. We'll call. If possible also tell us the woman's name and other details.
Bolan Meek
uh, Jonathan, how did RS lie to this lady? They do have the right to get whatever the market will bear for their products, same as you and me.
This gal shouldn't default, but try to make the best of the situation. The main thing is not that it might ruin her credit rating, but that it would be wrong. Of course, doing wrong things have consequences.
Though RS had the intrinxic right to price their offerings to what ever they think they can get, if they make a mistake and overprice, the consequence is that people who do their research will not buy from them. On the other hand, if they do (and they do), it is not a moral wrong, but it still brings bad consequences.
She may not be able to sell it for $1700, or what ever she paid for it, but if it doesn't serve her needs, she could sell if for whatever she could get,
and take the loss and chalk it up to experience.
Malcolm Petcher
There are numerous expressions that apply to the situation. "Caveat emptor." "A fool and his money are soon parted." People who don't know much about computers are usually going to pay more when they buy one. I have sold more than one computer to people to whom I had communicated that they could get a lot more machine if they would just go to IMS, ADAM, or any of several other places and tell the folks there what they want. Problem is, these people didn't know what they want, and were willing to pay the same money for a lessor machine as long as I told them what they want. Tandy does the same thing, except for much huger profits. People who are absolutely terrified to walk into a computer store will march right into a store full of stuffed animals with radios in them. I'm the other way around. I'll pay extra money for stereo equipment as long as the salesman doesn't hit me. I see all those knobs, buttons, and connectors, and I turn into a babe in the woods. Tandy's worst failing, though, is the use of completely uninformed salespeople. They can no more explain impedance to an audiophobe than they can explain RLL to a computerphobe. When people tell me they're interested in a computer I generally tell them what (if anything) I could put together from parts I have, and tell them to go to IMS to see what the alternatives are. Most of the folks at IMS know what they're doing.

idea for the overpriced tandy situation...
since if it fails to perform as it should, let's make it not perform as it should. first, let's test out how well tandy's power supply can handle a short circuit. overload protection worked?? ok, let's see how much faster the 5 volt logic works at 12 volts. worked?? well, let's try 24 volts. aha, smoke...
take it back to tandy, tell them it blew up while you were using it, and see what they do.
putting a little thought into it, it would be very difficult for them to tell that the machine was "worked on..."
and when you take it back, and they look at it, tell them you have decided you don't trust tandy machines and that you would like your money back.
if they replace it, do something else to it. and keep the cycle going.
if they keep you going 4 rounds, tell them you want out of the deal because the machine has been in the shop way too long, and you cannot be left without a computer to pursue your important tasks.
tech them to take an innocent person to the cleaners... damn bastards...

I have been doing the same thing, Malcolm. You can definitely build one yourself a lot cheaper and in just about an hour or two if you know where and how everything goes.

Chuck is self-employed and knows what he talks about, unlike others who shall remain nameless.
Caveat Emptor is a key concept of our economy and perhaps the reason why Tandy has never made the big time in computing or in electronics is because of their sales tactics and their noted lack of support.
But no one held a gun to her head and robbed her. She's a responsible adult and she made a crappy decision and yup, perhaps Tandy was unethical. But to suggest that she should default and expose herself to their attornies and collection agencies doesn't seem to me to be very good advice.
If it was me, I'd pay, sell for as much as possible and call all the local TV stations, papers, etc. to spread the stroy of the "ripoff" and also write to the President of Tandy. I suspect he'd like to know about the circumstances of her case and migt even help her out...

If the lady cares to hassle RS (and she certainly has MY best wishes) she can offer to sue them in small claims (for damages) make them refund her money, etc, on the basis of misrepresentation. On the CAD stuff. They'll buckle as soon she sends the summons thing, I'll wager. They can't afford to have hassles like this. They can't even use an attorney (at least in this state) which means that some management type is going to have to show up and look stupid in front of the judge. She will have brought an expert witness with some kind of verifiable credentials, like owner of a computer store or a consultant, they will not wish to appear like scum taking advantage of a poor, disabled, etc etc.

Ron, that was true for a long time, but nowadays, if you know what to specify, you can buy anything from a '286 machine to a '486-33 for the same or less than you can buy all the pieces. I think the reason is the people at the smaller computer stores are just as knowledgable as we are, and would rather spend an hour putting together a machine than spend an hour ringing up dozens of pieces. I still like putting together my own machines, though, especially if it's for somebody else. That way I know exactly what's in there and how it works, so I can answer questions. Also, of course, about every machine I've built recently has been a combination of parts I had lying around and newly purchased stuff. Out of six up and running machines only two were purchased as whole working units, and I've been into both of them. My daughter's XT is as purchased, except I added a no slot clock and VGA. V'ger's '386 machine is as purchased except I replaced the 40 meg drive with a 211 megger. The others (my '386 tower, two '286 machines, and an XT that lives on the floor) don't have a part among them that I haven't held on my hot little hands. There's something about putting together a machine that sort of kicks in the adrenalin and gives me a techie high. People who run or work out talk about endorphines (sp?) There must be a similar brain chemical that applies to people who put together computers. It's drudgery at first, then I sort of get on a roll. Switches get switched, jumpers get changed, tiny little manuals get scanned for any text that's still readable, and voila: there is born a new computer, or a new incarnation of an old computer. Then, if the drive isn't an IDE, comes the Horror: LOW LEVEL FORMAT THE HARD DRIVE. This usually takes about 17 tries using 7 different utilities, more if the thing was ever formatted before. Yesterday I replaced my son's ST238 with a Miniscribe 3053. Not enough hardware work to really get the chemicals flowing, and then it was time to do the "F" thing. The AMI built-in LLF kept croaking on cylinder 839. Speedstore starts at the high end, hiccuped when it encountered cylinder 839, but kept going. A few more runs with SS and it finally ran all the way through with no hiccups. Re-ran the built-in and it did the whole disk fine. This only took four hours. Stay tuned to next week's episode of "Watch Mister Computer Wizard" when we explore the advanced art of manual losing and calculate how many possible combinations of settings the switches on an XT motherboard can have.
Ron House
Well, I still think you can save a little, but you are probably rigth, the savings today wouldn't be near as substantial as it was in the past. But as for me, I would rather build MY own as I did, because I want to know what is in it, how it got there, and that way I will have a better idea of what to look at if something flakes. PLUS... I like to tinker. ;-)
wayne a. willingham
I've found that anytime you're dealing with a large company like Tandy, the first thing to do is write a letter to the president. A president's letter usually will get some kind of response. She can explain that the salesman misled her, that she has learned how overpriced RS computers are, and that she won't even buy a AA battery from them in the future if she doesn't get some satisfaction. Only then can she take any other action. I've informed creditors that payments will be held in an escrow account until disputes are settled - talk to your bank or attorney about that.

There is one place out on highway 99 just under Queen Anne that specializes in old Volvos. And a place up in Lake City. Maybe next Saturday I should just start cruising all of these places...:)

Bolan Meek: did you ever get StarFight, or have you given up on that?
Jim Wells: (did I spell that right?) I know who Chuck is. Two people can disagree, you know....just ask Malcolm (Jab, Jab). As for being self-employed, that means one of two things: No one will hire you, or you haven't gone broke yet. I owned a computer store for 2 years. I left it because I wanted to pursue other things. I now run a programming business on the side and try to help people put machines together AFFORDABLY.
All others: Okay, the lady and RS have a problem. They'll have to fix it. Enought with the arguments. Anybody looking for a Trombone or Oboe?
Tracy Harton
Yea, one of the best reasons to build your own system is that you know exactly what's in it, and often have the doc sheets for all the jumpers (or already know what they all are).. Nothing like getting some noname card with 56 jumpers and NO docs... ;-)
Bolan Meek
Jonathan, Bryan Parker has uploaded StarFight to Salamandria. I haven't been able to download it yet. Feel free to beat me to it; leave me a note if
you do. I have to implement XMODEM before I can...

I have been sitting and reading the saga of RS and the computer mess and until now haven't commented. My question is, why does she need this computer anyway if she can't afford to pay the electric bill? If needed for work I guess it is a necessity but then it should be deductible as a business write-off. Maybe I am not correct on this though as I still don't understand the IRS feelings on computers as a business expense. (and it doesn't apply to me anyway)
And the talk about it not being "right" to default on the loan.......defaults happen every day. Just look at the number of houses reposessed and offered by HUD. If she is in such a tight money situation, why should she go further in debt just to pay off something that ain't worth crap. Defaulting is not the end of the world but continuing to dump her money down that bottomless pit may lead to much worse things like eviction or having her utilities turned off etc.
My point is, maybe it ain't right to default but the alternative could get very grim. Anyway good luck to her. :)

personally i don't like the practices of radio shack personnel when it comes to the sales and service of their machines.
i've been buying tandy right from the beginning, starting with a model 2. it developed disk problems (would not be able to write to half of a disk) so i called them to ask them what it could be. they said bring it down.
took it into the center at southcenter (when there was a computer center there) and they took a look at it. claimed there was no problem. they checked it out with trsdos, which ran single density. i used cp/m, which does double density. had them boot the machine on my OS, and the problem showed up. they claimed that the machine was functioning fine, as it worked with their (brain dead) operating system. needless to say, i wasn't happy about this, and they tried to charge me $55 for that!!! i told them i will only pay them if they repair it so it would do double density like it had before, and they refused.
mind you, there were several million copies of pickles and trout cp/m out there running fine on tandy machines at double density, mine just happenned to have that part broken. it wouldn't have bothered me if they would have repaired it, but they flat out refused to do so.
strangely enough, radio shack eventually did produce a version of trsdos that did double density, but they didn't have a copy of that around at the time. really pissed me off.
i refused to pay them, and they haven't come after me to this day.
once in portland i needed a host interface for my model 12 so i could connect a tandy hard drive subsystem i had laying around. i went to the store that handled computers for my area, and the sales people didn't even know what i was talking about. (mind you, i was using terms right out of tandy's own catalogue.) i described the machine to them, and they claimed that they never produced a machine that used 8 inch floppies!!
finally, after i pointed to it in an old catalogue, they drew blanks on their faces. found the catalogue number of the host interface. they keyed it up in their computer. sure enough, there it was. none in stock, so they'll have to order one. they call ft worth...
fort worth has none. they aren't making them anymore...
so, i ask for a copy of the technical reference manual for the model 2 series, which would have the schematic of the host interface, so that i could reverse engineer the thing.
and that's when the salecritter REALLY pissed me off royally...
"why don't you just get rid of this old junk and buy one of our new tandy 1000s?? we have credit terms if you need them..."
i walked out of the store...
and since that time, i have never gone back into a radio shack store for any computer related purpose...

I've got my share of unknown jumperfull (heh) cards laying around here..

Why in the world would somebody who doesn't even have enough income to pay her electric bill sign up for a loan on a $1700 computer? I think it's time to stop slamming Tandy and recognize that what we have here is a case of advanced consumer stupidity. The machine may have been overpriced, but that has nothing to do with the fact that she signed up for a loan she couldn't afford. If somebody sold her a rock for $1700 the obligation would have been just as real. Now that I've heard more of the story, though, I'd say she should go ahead and default and ruin her credit rating since she obviously isn't credit worthy anyway.
stderr
She told me that she DOESN'T have the money to pay this computer off. That means she has to default and ruin her credit or somewho fight it in court.
stderr
Chuck> Why can't she use whatever methods at her disposal to get back at a company that used every method it had to take advantage of her? Also, it's part of ripping people off, that everyone will talk badly about you behind your back. That is one of the most powerful methods consumers have to make business carry its fair burden.
Steve Baxter
And as for selling in a newspaper add... I see a lot of over-priced systems for sale. I doubt that any of them sell at the advertised price.
From working in real estate I know that over-priced stuff just sits there. Oh, once in a while someone comes along and NEEDS something that's over-priced. And he usually finds a way to buy it. But that's rare. The only thing high prices do is help sell everyone else's stuff.
I doubt she can get $700 for it even if it's in the paper for a month. True market value is probably more like $400.
I have bought more than one complete system (including printer) for around $200. I bought a nice 286 with a 40 meg HD, printer, mouse, mono monitor, 2 megs of RAM for $350. (And it wasn't a Tandy!)
Chang Yoon
Tracy's right and so is Malcolm. When she went out to buy the computer in the first place, she should have taken someone who was knowledgeable. Also, WHY IN THE WORLD is she buying a computer when she can't even pay her electric bills?!? That's fairly stupid. Then again, she could be trying to screw Radio Shack..

Look, I bought a PS/2 Model 50Z three years ago and payed $2,975.00 for it with DOS and mono VGA. Was it IBMs fault that I fell for a dog at that price? No. I payed the bill and still have the 50Z. I will never sell it because for all I could get for it, it is better for me to live with it as a play machine for the kids.
Moral of the story... Tandy is a retailer. Period. She made the decision, she should live up to it. I am not defending Tandy's poor service in the least, and I would never buy a Tandy to start with, I used to work for Radio Shack in Alderwood Mall when it first opened in 1979. Except for the very few so called gurus at the time which were extremely scattered, the salesmen, including me, knew nothing. The sad part was that Tandy made no effort to ever try to teach us ANYTHING about the comuters, only to sell them. As far as I know, it has never changed.
Funny side note.. the local district manager always treated me good when I was there in Seattle working in Alderwood. I led him dicreetly to think I was a spy from the home office, being as I had moved there from Dallas... ;-)

yeah, i used to work for RS, way back in my distant past. i was one of the few store managers who knew a bit from a byte, so they put me in a store near TI where a big percentage of the customers were computer literate. unfortunately, it was not a good company to work for at the time -- unless you were a man (despite what they claimed).
Dr. Technical
There is a place in Portland (I think) name of John's Import Auto Wrecking (800 446 7678) which claims to be "the largest Supply in the Country" of Volvo parts you might give them a try.
p.s. Radio Shack has the highest profit margin of any computer retailer. Their sales people are ignorant for a reason.

Earth calling space, Earth calling space. Since when can one "not afford" to go bankrupt?
Bryan Parker
Pat J -- I thought semi-automatic firearms were now ILLEGAL? (somebody?) pardon me if I'm wrong.
Ron House
Wrong, Bryan.... automatics are illegal... some semis can no longer be sold be gun shops, but ALL can be traded or sold privately. Especially in Texas, where re-registration of guns is not demanded, allowed or even encouraged by the state and local governemnts.
Steve Baxter
Mary Ann Caruth>
Look in Computer Shopper. A serial card is about $12. A mouse is about $29 or more.

No, they are not illegal. fully automatic ones are illegal, unless you have a federal permit. if they outlawed semi-automatic guns, that would be probably over half the guns now owned. many "hunting rifles" are semi-auto, as are many pistols.

Yeah, Malcolm... I just called IMS yesterday... What are the advantages of upgrading versus replacing my computer...

Wayne, not a "thread", it's called a "topic" or "discussion". Thread reminds of me of a long line of unrelated topics of the old linear systems. Ugh..
Ron House
I have the 7.65mm ( 32 cal. ) .... I like it because it is powerful enough to do the dmage and easy enough for my wife to handle.
Malcolm Petcher
Kevin, the advantage of upgrading is somewhat reduced cost. The advantage of replacing is you have a whole computer left over instead of an pile of parts. Contrary to whoever said it, there's nothing wrong with an SX - it runs nearly as fast as the same speed DX, since a lot of the memory cycles are consumed in lookahead instruction cache fetches during what would otherwise be non-memory cycles. However the SX only goes up to 20 MHz (or 25?) The DX goes up to 40. At the high end, though, you're better off with a '486-33. Intel is in the process of squeezing out their own '386 DX processor between the '386 SX and the '486.
Bryan Parker
But Bolan, if your term program can shell to DOS, why not just run an external Zmodem?

i'm not questioning that it was a brain dead thing for her to buy a computer when she couldn't afford the electricity to run it, and i'm not questioning that it was another brain dead thing for her to go computer shopping without a knowledgeable guide...
what i am questioning is the misleading statements made about the machine's capabilities that probably played a good percentage in the decision to buy it or not.
radio shack is very well known for doing that, and i have experienced their deception before.
which is why i don't buy from them anymore...
Chuck Thompson
Malcolm --
Do you sense some sort of "they" attitude here? "They" went out on the street and dragged some poor woman in and "they" made her buy a computer that now isn't worth what "they" said it was and "they" ought to be punished because "they" should have known better.
Doesn't anyone take responsibility for his/her own actions any more? I have a vision of some of these folks running about yelling about the gummit interfering in their private lives (a sentiment with which I agree, by the way) but then, "they" need to be punished for offering for sale something that, in hindsight, wasn't what "she" thought "they" said.
Did I miss something here? Did a salesman hold a gun to her head and make her buy that Tandy computer? Did someone hold her hand and make her sign the payment agreement?
I bought a 386-25 about 18 months ago -- 4 megs of RAM, 105 meg HD, 5.25 and 3 inch floppies, SVGA monitor -- nice computer. Got it at dealer cost for about $2850. I could get the same thing today for about half that, and could probably get a 486-33 with a bigger HD for the 3 grand. Do you suppose that "they" ought to give me my money back?
Great concept. "I" do whatever "I" want, and when something doesn't work out the way "I" planned it, "they" are responsible.
Whatever happened to self reliance?

I never thought I'd have to say this, but I agree with you 100% on this one. "They" are responsible for everything that happens to anyone now. Personal responsibility is a thing of the past.

I'm looking a card with TWO parallel ports... Do these things even exist? I've looked all over, but no one seems to carry them. Its fine if the 2nd port is on just a separate back panel like many serial cards do. (I've got lots of opening I can move it to so I don't use a slot...) A Multi I/O card would be fine, too. (1/2 Serial, 2 Parallel, Game doesn't matter).. Any ideas?

Well, a few questions... I'm looking for a GOOD price on a mini tower case or med or full-size tower case with PS... these would be needed for 286-12/16 motherboards
Also, if you have the choice, go DX! I've discovered that my SX, while really nice in the multitasdking department, lacks something when I'm going for more ram, etc...

There are MY opinions, anyway.

Tracy, IMS has a dual serial/dual parallel board for $27. Beltline at Marsh or Parker at Independence.
Kevin, VGA is 640 X 480 X 16 or 320 X 480 X 256. SVGA is 640 X 480 X 256 and up. My system (NEC Multisync 3D and Video-7 board) can do 1024 X 768 at 16 colors and 800 X 600 at 256 colors. I think I have one GIF picture that takes advantage of all that capability.

Kevin, to expand on what Malcolm said..the SVGA relly comes into effect when you use AutoCAD and it's releated products..I think you can also use it for Windows but don't qoute me on that. If you are going to use your computer for Cad programs then it is well worth your money.. otherwise if you are going to use it for viewing Gifs, programming,or playing games then I recomend getting the VGA and not the SVGA. As of now only a few CAD programs and maybe Windows supports SVGA..no game manufactures plan on supporting SVGA anytime in the near future, also there are few gifs that are 1024 x 768 in size;anyway certain gif programs will allow you to view the gif even with a VGA.
Hope this answers your question.

Kevin: SVGA has higher resolutions and more colors than VGA. Up to 24 million colors, for that matter.

SVGA is worth the extra $79. There are now games that take advantage to SVGA and most SVGA boards come with Windows drivers. I run Windows at 1024x768x256. I also have a few games that use 640x480x256 which normal VGA doesn't do.
Also it's cheaper to get it now, then to upgrade later.

If you're buying video now, then definitely go for ñ…SVGA. The default
choice is any TSENG ET4000 based card: There are dozens of them ranging
from û$90 to $190. A step above is faster versions of the same basic
structure. The only thing to consider is that the default Windows display
18 - 24 months from nowû will be a step beyond the basic ET4000 archtitecture. No standard has emerged but there are plenty of contenders showing up week by week.û
So you can buy VGA now, and fast-SVGA later, or SVGA now and fast-SVGA later.
Windows is SO much better at 800*600. And if you want to do real DTP or
drawing, or CAD, then you'll want to use 1024*768 which gets you the
ability to see a page actual size (horizontally).

I wouldn't buy big-ticket items at RAdio Shack, but they are a good source for some hard to find items, like y-patch-cords with the right kind of jacks you want, etc. I also found for about $20 a good junction box that lets me use my one AUX input on my stereo to plug in several sources (TV, CD player, tape player) and switch between them without having to re-connect wires all the time.

The bottom line is, and always has been, caveate emptor. I've made a few stupid purchases in my life, but I never went crying to the vendor to undo my stupidity. It's stupid to sign on the dotted line for something you can't afford, and it's childish to expect the big corporation to make the problem go away. The folks in the Radio Shack store are not, in general, educated enough to know if they're lying. If you're no more educated you have no business shopping there. Almost every time I buy anything at Radio Shack I have to describe in detail what I need to the salesman I wanted to leave me alone. One time I was looking for 92 ohm cable and BNC connectors for an ARCnet I was putting together. I wound up with 50 ohm cable which was OK because the run was short, and that was all they had. I bet the guy that sold me that cable told every next customer they needed CB antenna cable for ARCnet. You have to keep in mind that even those self-taught in electronics get better jobs than that. I at least try to explain to them what I need, why I need it, and what I intend to do with it, since my input is about the only electronics training they'll ever get. Still, most of it seems to zip over their heads.
Tracy Harton
Bonnie, I'm not sure how much is cheap.. I'm not buying it for myself (got all the modems I need, just not enough to sell to this person).. Its for a school teacher that needs it for something.. Malcolm - well it's not like the people are Radio Crack are working there because NASA wasn't hiring that day... there's a Radio Shack by me with a guy that really knows his stuff tho... probably been there for 20+ years... you've just got to know who to trust...
Malcolm Petcher
Quite true - in even the most mundane job there are exemplary employees. It's just that in the case of Radio Shack as well as most other clerical positions it's not required. You and I can tell the difference, but the masses can't. No layman has any business complaining if they got rooked at Radio shack buying anything more complicated than a stuffed toy with a radio in it. You don't even have to be an expert to shop around and find better prices and higher quality. If it's a couple of 1K resistors or a DB-25 connector I'll go ahead and pay double what I would pay elsewhere just for the convenience. If it's an $1800 AT clone I could get elsewhere for $900, even if I was totally computer illiterate, I would be stupid not to check somebody else's prices before I bought. It takes some technical prowess to filter misinformation from a Radio Shack clerk. It takes no knowledge whatsoever to tell that $1800 is bigger than $900. The wierd part is the same people that will shop for a month for the best price on a couch or a TV set will walk into a Radio Shack and buy a computer or a stereo without checking any other place.
One thing you can plan on though: Even the most knowledgable Radio Shack employee is not going to say to a customer "This machine is $1800. However, you can get the same thing at IMS for $900." Neither will the Cadillac salesman point out that the Toyota Camry will have better accelleration and require less service than his Seville, and at half the price, even though he probably drives a Camry to work.

File : 2496.txt - Upgrade a 24oo baud modem to a 96oo baud modem -
*************************************************************************
How to upgrade your 24oo modem into a 96oo baud. (US Robotics compatible
of course)
Written By
Death Bringer (CPT/Info-Net/IRA)
06/7/91
Be sure to turn off your modem before you begin.
First of all, you need to go to your nearby electronics store, don't try
to go to Radio Shack, their parts have their own model numbers and you'll
have a hell of a time getting the parts you need. This upgrading of your
modem will not work on old hayes modems, but they will work on any clone
maker of modems (everex, practical peripherals, anchor, ati, intel, etc.)
It will only work with modems with the Intel Chipset.
This technique widens the band width by using a different chip that is
similiar to the chip already in your modem.
Parts Needed:
16550 UART
L4313545 IC
SC11020CN IC
L8730183 IC
First of all, check to see if your biggest chips are soldered or socketed.
if they are soldered, you'll have to de-solder the chips before you begin.
After you get that done, replace the 8250 UART with the 16550 UART. (16550
UARTs are required for 9600+ speeds). The other 1 or 2 chip(s) need(s)
to replaced with INTEL L4313545 instead of the chip that is already there.
If your modem has another socket or more, than you are in luck, you can
purchase a chip from US Robotics, and make your modem faster than 9600.
If you don't have the socket, than you can only go 9600. I'll get the
chip number to you in the next edition and explain how and where to
install it. I am working on a way for the people (like me) that do not have
the extra socket in their modem to speed up the rates. I am working on a way
to piggy back the chip. I'll get back to you. There should be a 22 pin
chip on your modem also with a model number of SC11005CN or some where close
to it. Replace it with the SC11020CN. Also, replace the L8630173 with the
L8730183 chip. If you have any suggestions or questions, you can locate me
through Compuserve USER ID 74702,97524
*****OPTIONAL, LAP-M Error correction*****
Adding error correction is rather simple. For this these parts are
necessary:
Potentiometer. This is a 5k audio taper variable resistor.
Capacitor. Any non-polarized 1.0 to 1.5 uf cap should do.
100 ohm resistor - quarter or half watt.
Wire
Solder, soldering iron, etc.
Solder one end of the capacitor to PIN 1 of the phone line input jack
|-------------------|
| \ line in ::
| \ phone in ::
|-----------||||||||| pin 1^
If your modem is external, the diagram looks like this.
|------------------|
| /|
| ||RS-232 port
| \| ::
| |-|line in ::
| |-| pin 1^
| |-|phone in
| |-|
|------------------|
This should be on the back of the modem.
Pin one should the farthest on the bottom left.
Solder the other end of the capacitor to the center lug of the potentiometer
(there are three lugs on this critter). Solder one end of the resistor to the
PIN 4 of the line input jack. Solder the other end of the resistor
to either one of the remaining outside lugs of the potentiometer. Doesn't
matter which one.

First, a personal recomendation. _THIS WORKS!!!_ I have been plagued with
2400 baud for some time. I hate waiting for the transfer to finish so that
i can use the phone. Threw the gismo together in about 10 or 15 minutes,
took another five to adjust the pot for best results on my worst
conection, and guess what? No more slow connections!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Have Fun!
I am working on cheap ways to install V.32/V.42bis on your modified modem
*************************Updated, 6/16/91********************************
Installing V.42bis:
1) You will need to purchase a 27C512 ROM chip.
2) You will need to purchase a Sony CXK58257P-12L (or equivalent) Ram chip.
3) Install the Rom in the Supervisor (SUP) socket.
4) Install the Ram in the Ram socket.
5) Make up two 3 pin jumpers for P9 and P10 with pins 1 and 2 jumpered
on one and pins 2 and 3 jumpered on the other. Connect the vacant pin 1
on the one to the vacant pin 3 on the other with a jumper wire.
6) Remove the jumpers on P9 and P10.
7) Install the jumper with pins 1 and 2 connected together on P9.
8) Connect the jumper with pins 2 and 3 connected together on P10.

Packet Radio also requires a HAM Radio License.
The TNC units are in the range of $75 to $300 depending upon how well it works, and the complexity of the software that works with it. One in the $150 range will probably do all you need. The expensive ones also handle things like Radio Teletype.
The radio is a 2 meter tranceiver, they can vary in price from $100 used for an old crystal controlled unit to $250 used for a fancy one. Most are designed for Automobile installations so you will probably have to provide some source of 12 volt power.
New radios are about double the above prices. Check your local HAM radio store for new and used radios.
License exams are given regularly by the various HAM clubs in the Dallas area, and study guides are available.
Check the magazine rack for 73 and CQ magazine, they have several ads for TNC's and radio equipment. For specific magazines, again check the local HAM radio store. Wholesale Electronics at Ross and Central Expway has a good selection.
There is some 10 meter packet activity, but not near as much as on 2 meters. But if you are a good technician, you could convert an old CB radio to use on 10 meters for packet.
Good Luck
