Nashville's "Who Am I" BBS, running Fredcit, is back on line again and netting as of about 30 minutes ago. He will be bringing in another 3 Fredcit boards in the Nashville area to the net with him. Sysop goes by the name of "Don't Ask"... catchy.
A hearty hello and welcome back!
Don't Ask
Who Am I BBS in Nashville, TN is now on the net. Morning, folks!
WAI is netting with MF.
Pat Jankowiak
A new FredCit comes online!
Xanthippe`s
(214)-924-1725
Coming soon to a networked room near you...
Pat Jankowiak
Is this room now found for the CHZ??? Vee zshall zeee.
Lady Tephra
Joe Carrasquilla: Chuck's Folly is down and from the looks of will probably stay that way. Don't know about Master Mind. Did hear that Mason-Dixon Line is coming back but probably with a new system name; he needed HD repair which often takes longer to pay for then it does to get done. Don't know where he'll be netting for sure just yet.
Don't Ask
Coming soon from Nashville through Who Am I is a board called "The Acid Test" running FredCit. Should be up and netting within the next week and a half! Will be adding 2 more boards afterwards, looks like. The net is expanding, folks!
Waxed
Welcome, Nashville!
Saphyre
Shades will be netting with that same node in Georgia.....
Chuck Knight
OK, Lady Tephra is right...until I figure out what's going on with the software (will NOT configure on my system for some reason) Chuck's Folly is down for good. DRAT! Master Mind is now running UNIX, rather than FredCit...
Joe Carrasquillo
Thank you Lady Tephra in Dallas. I know the pain and anguish of hard disk failures and do sympathize completely. Hey Saph! *smooch* how ya been? So who is this in Georgia? Is it the Vixen herself or is it Moma Belle? :)
She-Zog
Howdy Nashville !!
Livia
I would assume it's Pretty Eyes.
Heather R. Scott
James T. Kirk... if you want to net the Starfleet International room, ask Steve Baxter to request it from Memory Alpha, and I'll send it to him, to net to you... :) Plus other Star Trek rooms.
Saphyre
It is the Vixen herself
Shane Johnson
Maybe we should get a copy of Acit to that board... :)
Livia
A board that wants to call itself The Acid Test should really be running ACit. Want a copy? :)
Don't Ask
Thanks, waxed and She-Zog! Good to be here.
Mad Hatchet
Ah, but wars are so much fun....... :)
Captain James T Kirk
Mem Alpha has Star Trek rooms??? Coooool... I'll ask him to grab those. thanks, heather!
Fred
Let's not start using this room for 'software wars' again, please! I can see every programmer on the net getting into this one...
Steve Baxter
Have you tried the command line ctdl -help or ctdl -? It was something like that to get all the command line options.
Flying Wombat
Fred: I know what you mean. fortunately, not every programmer >is< going to get into it.. who has time and energy to waste, anyhow?
if people want to start a netted room and call it "Software Wars," that'd be fine with me. or they could always use Sysop Forum.. :)
Solaufein Rhomduil
I have tried to run NCIT as a door, but it won't do it for callers, just for console peoples.
Chuck Knight
Hey, send down a copy of nightcit and acit...I'm gathering all the Cit derivitives I can get my hands on... You can QNet to Dallas to Mystic Frenzy, with Ron's permission, of course...
Pat Jankowiak
Ok, here's a new board to add to your ROUTE.CIT files:
"Xanthippe's" alias "XPP"
Route through CHZ.
Sysop: Yram Nna Hturac (214) 942-1725
Don't Ask
Livia: ACit? Sure, tell me where to pick it up and I'll take a peek at it... ;>
Pat Jankowiak
CHZ is down for now till i get a new modem and keyboard.
,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,<><><<<><<<<<<><><><<<><<<<>,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,???
Jeremiah Johnson
LaDzhaRi: OK, I'll pass that on - if you send mail to GridMaker @ The Log Cabin, it gets passed on (through forwarding to account at other node.) I hope you have a route to here!
Netgrid is in work, I'm editing it at work while idle, next listing by next weekend. Guaranteed obsolete before it's posted :-)
Heather R. Scott
What do you expect from a board named after the information planet in Star Trek??? :) I gots lots of ST rooms!
She-Zog
Cat Hair Zone.... are you receiving?
Heather R. Scott
Netgridmaker, Memory Alpha is now netting with Applegrove. :)
Captain James T Kirk
Solaufein> thats kinda weird... I CAN'T use it locally... only remote users can...
Kid Charlemagne
(Not the Real) Graceland is on the net, connecting to Shades and i believe Milliways. Right now it's local, but it will soon move to atlanta GA. (yeah, i know, the region is "memphis". kind of a screw-up, kind of a twit region....)
The Maven
Otto, Fred has already been notified about that particular bug as of a bit ago.
Heather R. Scott
Otto, if you write protect certain cit files, it's going to crash anyways.
Livia
ACit is available right here on Amber, amazingly enough. :) You want the file UPDATE.ZIP, which is in the room 'The ACit Test', in the Ghostwheel hallway. The number is 206-643-9643.
Pat Jankowiak
Were back!
Fred
Fred's Toy just added the "Job Search" room. Who wants to net it?
Ron House
Bummer, pat...
Pat Jankowiak
Cat Hair Zone is Recieving, She-Zog @ fantasia Unltd.!
Fred
On of the best solutions to people attacking your command.com; put it someplace other then C:\COMMAND.COM or C:\DOS\COMMAND.COM, and set COMSPEC in your CONFIG.SYS to point to it... that's what I do :)
Joe Carrasquillo
Fred, I have it as "Job Line" on my board, but you guys can call it what ever you want though :) I'll need a net test from every region that has pulled the room so that I can twix those areas for jobs.
She-Zog
We'll add 'Job Search' to the rooms we net with you Fred.
Captain James T Kirk
Heather, Have i been Verifyed on your board yet? (I dont wanna waist the money to call, only to find that i can't login....)
TaleTeller
I think you should go into details. Did you have a directory room pointing at your root directory?
Mark Willis
Sneaky trick to slow people down on that - have autoexec.bat unzip a backup copy of command, com, then compare the two - if not exactly alike, have the program yell at you! (Erase the backup copy if the compare works OK! :-) That can help... If you code it right, you can even rewrite command.com & then reboot if they're different, but ya better know what you're doing there...
Heather R. Scott
James T Kirk... that's why I said you had access, you're verified. :)
Zen master
I'd speculate that it's safe to make FCIT.EXE read-only.. and that many Citadels merely need to be in the DOS Path somewhere in order to run.
San San
I'd like to pick up "Job Search" please. If it nets to Texas let's just forget it, ok? JUST kidding, really...
:)
Ron House
Mason Dixon Line is now up and running again as "Hotel Coral Essex"... please replace all node info for MD to now read HCE....
Ron House
Oh, BTW, HCE routes through MF...
Joe Carrasquillo
O.K. San San, I've added it to our node. Again, it is called "Job Line" on my board. I'll make it "Job Search" on yours.
The Great Zod
Better than zipping it, put it in an obscure directory, or copy it to a wierd name in the root dir. One more cron event :)
COMP C:\COMMAND.COM C:\BIZZARE.OVL
IF ERRORLEVEL > 0 THEN COPY C:\BIZZARE.OVL C:\COMMAND.COM
EXIT
Might take a whole minute..
Saphyre
Shades also carries it as JOBLINE (one word) so anyone who wants to pick it up here can.
Fred
Oh, that one. Thanks for telling me that Maven, the fix I was talking about is in 41x now.
Fred
OK, that's Job Search for PS & Fant, and Job Line for CB.... right?
Zen, you're right. Write protect on the FCIT.EXE (*.EXE for my stuff actually) should work.
Fred
That reminds me, Cave Bear, we have to net... call & make a node account.
Confederate Yankee
Hotel Coral Essex (a.k.a. Former Mason-Dixon Line) is up and running NETGRIDMAKER...for you information I net with the following boards...
Rainbow's End
Mystic Frenzy
Salamandria
If you need more information, just holler!!!!
later...
TaleTeller
Congratulate me, I've updated something in my ROUTE.CIT. Hotel Coral Essex it is.
Steve Baxter
Fred>
Please add Job Search in the nodes.cit called the same on my end.
Joe Carrasquillo
Heather, just curious. I called your board a couple of times and was never verified, you didn't give me access and you definately didn't call. Was this an oversight or did you feel I was not not welcomed? I thought it was a pity.
Heather R. Scott
Joe, it was definitely an oversight. I don't usually call (very rarely), give me 48 hours to verify you (turn off the verify bit), and you'll have access to most of the board. ;)
Cave Bear
Thanks Saph, I'll make the correction on my nodes.cit. :)
Flying Wombat
TT: congratulations. :)
Doctor Dee

GridMaker
OK folks, from here on the updates are up to you guys so to speak - sysop netmail will go out in a few days, soon as I check routes (again...) Any net connection with a "?" means I don't know what type of net connection it is - PLEASE communicate that!
Joe Carrasquillo
Thank You very much GridMaker!
Fred
I wonder if there's any chance of picking up connections in Bellingham or eastern WA. Anyone know of compatable Cits out there?
Shane Johnson
JJ:
Creative Concepts is no-longer netting... and the number 433-8084 is not my number anymore... Please change it to an "Un-listed" entry for now... I'll get you the new number as soon as the Citadel to Unix conversion is completed (and after I get my system up at least 10% more than it is...) I'm really busy with several things right now, and would like to keep the "CON" net prefix... as "concept" is going to be the name of the Xenix system when it comes up.
Angela Davis
There is at least one Citadel in Bellingham. Ask Hero@Paradise about it.

GRIDMAKER!!!
Umm,, you should note the following....
Mason-Dixon Line went down in October, Hotel Coral Essex (Hi TaleTeller!) is now what use to be Mason-Dixon Line...
(Everyone get that??? *GRIN*)

There is. It's "Road to Emmaus" and it runs CenCit. We network using Net1.1
Kid Charlemagne
(not the real) graceland is running a MAVENCIT, not an acit.
GridMaker
Aaack, I >>HATE<< it when people just put stuff in public here :(
Please check out & see if you have a route to NetGridMaker, and send e-mail to there whenever possible with net grid updates - I do the updates to the net grid file offline, on my portable, and if I try to capture stuff from here it's much more of a pain;
You also can send e-mail to gridmaker @ The Log Cabin, and that gets forwarded to the NetGridMaker node. Nice coding on Zen's part :)
If you can't get a net connect through to NetGridMaker OR The Log Cabin, then do use a pubic post here - but be aware that it's a nasty pain for me :( - and make sure you complain about the lack of path, maybe together we can make the path work out...
I'll reroute this coming weekend for any nodes I can't find, and send another set of "pings" - then if all goes well a revised grid will be out a few days to a week after that... With work it usually works best for me to do it on the weekends!
Little Nemo
A "pubic post", gridmaker?

There >was< Incubus BBS in Ellensberg, WA. (509-962-3584) I don't know if it's still running. I offered to net but he was planning to net with a Seattle node by mailing diskettes back and forth every day. I haven't called in a while.
There might be a node going public in Walla Walla soon. I will net there if possible.
I have also sent the software to the Spokane area and we might get a call from there at any time.
Livia
It's more of a pain for us to send email, JJ. Having it done in public also allows corrections to be made more easily: if sysop A doesn't respond, and sysop B posts what s/he thinks is A's info, but makes mistakes, others can clarify. And if it's all in one room, it can't be that hard to capture using alt-p.

Hi Babs!
Little Nemo
weird. I'm not getting any doubling here. I did have a weird crash the other night while a backup cron event was happening. Maybe something got tweaked. ANyone else running into trouble?
Bugs Bunny
Babs? Babs Bunny?
Little Nemo
My backup was done AFTER the crash. That would help things any, would it?
Twoflower
Due to some strange message table error, the occasional networked message here has doubled.
I don't know if it will be passed on anywhere else.
It seems slumberland (when netting) did something to the message table. When I logged in just after slumberland logged out (I was also logged in just BEFORE slumberland called) it gave me 'can
't find message #XXXXX at byte XXXX' errors, on all messages.
I did a control-alt-del and reconfig, and it seems to have been fixed, but some of the messages passed here from slumberland were copies of earlier messages.
Bizzare.
TaleTeller
Hi Confederate Yankee!
Joe Carrasquillo
Twoflower, it sounds like Slumberland reconfigured itself somehow. I hope Wendi made recent backups, that would certainly correct the message data and tables. I hope US West corrects the situation stat too.
San San
Anyone now the number for the boards in Nashville?
Heather R. Scott
Beowulf, and Nighthawk, you both have access (again) to Memory Alpha, and I fixed your names... forget your passwords when you logged in the second time? ;)
Heather R. Scott
No problem... I just nuked the old accounts, and fixed the names on the new ones. :)

You're welcome!!! BTW, you still want to net, Beo?
Jeremiah Johnson
Livia, all: How dang easy do ya think it is for ME to gather info from 3 rooms (WAN, Networking, AND Other Boards)? Yeah it's more of a pain for YOU to send e-mail; and a HELL of a pain for me if you don't... I've made it possible for any sysop to send mail to GridMaker @ TLC (provided of course that they have a route to here) and that gets forwarded to NET. I have a few things to do with my life other than working so that you don't have to send one piece of mail, apiece, once in a while...
I may gather info, >>ONLY FROM WAN ADMIN<<, in the future if there's a worthwhile amount of info in here & not so much other stuff... Just don't want to spend hours editing massive print logs every two weeks or so to save you time... It's not like it's really all THAT hard to type .eegridmaker@TLC q^K^Rgridinfo.cit@XS. That's a whole 35 keystrokes or so... Gods what a whole lot of work, once a month or so...
Livia
JJ: you didn't answer my point about public posts (as opposed to email) of net info allowing for immediate correction of errors.
Beowulf
Hey works for me:) Thanks, Heather.
Twoflower
Wait, JJ, don't bother with it at all. Beowulf believes you're just attempting to get control of the network.
Beowulf
Ah, the man that prides himself on lacking honor, speaks words of no value or meaning, yet again. Sorta too flowery, isn't it?
Heather R. Scott
:) I even sent you net mail, since I wasn't sure if you read this room, Beo! :D
Beowulf
Sure thing, Heather. I'll wander on over to Memory Alpha, and we can discuss particulars.
Twoflower
I have as of yet to say I pride myself on lacking humor.
I, personally, believe that I have a sense of humor.
But then again, that's in the eye of the beholder.
Just hope it isn't in Beholder's eye. I doubt he'd like that.
She-Zog
Beo, ya can't recognize a sense of humor if ya don't own one yourself
Jeremiah Johnson
Livia: read it. If it's public in WAN Admin, then I'll gather it. I agree, maybe there's a slight advantage to public posts; there are also disadvantages for me (MY point which ya don't seem to note!) as well as disadvantages for anyone who feels it's OK to share their phone # with me but doesn't care to share it with the whole net...
Still can't reach most of the net anyways due to a lack of routing on many boards, especially for newer nodes (of course!) It's a software problem, and solving it via making the sysops work harder to do maintenance is at best a stopgap measure, but the only measure we can take at present...
Beowulf
I may even get that mail, someday, Heather:) Meanwhile, I write you down on Memory Alpha.
Saphyre
well you can add a route to Not the real Graceland in Georgia to Shades and a route to Acme Looniversity to Shades and soon a route to Columbia Crest BBS with Shades.
Twoflower
Geeze, sounds like Shades is becoming a clearing house...:)
Heather R. Scott
You got it, Beo, you even ANSWERED it! (That's how I know you got it!) :)
Beowulf
C'mon Heather, you and I know how much E-mail a sysop has to deal with everyday. It is hard to keep track of who you are talking to about what. By the way, were you the one that was talking about exotic male undergarments? :)
Captain James T Kirk
Again Sence i don't get any room better...
How do you tell DragCit to use a filename for a hall description???

If you are of the mind that US West (or GTE) will not charge BBS lines business rates because access to the BBS is free, I'd encourage you to read the following article, which is now becoming one of many in regional and national publications, including Communications Daily.
I will be happy to keep people posted as we get more info, but would prefer to it in its own room. Greenspace nets with Fred's Toy, TurboTech, Outer Limits, Log Cabin. I would consider adding another node or two to the calling list if there is interest. Room on Greenspace is called "Phone Tariffs" for those systems interested in netting the room.
I DO BELIEVE THIS IS SOMETING SYSOPS AND USERS SHOULD PAY ATTENTION TO. Some folks in Indiana did not, and now some sysops are paying business rates even though they don't charge for access.
Feel free to post this article for users as well as sysops.
BBS Controversy Brews Close to Home
by Bruce Miller
In a case before the Public Utility Commission of Oregon, US West is maintaining three phone lines connected to a free-access BBS in a residence should be billed at business rates. Because of the similarities in tariffs from state to state and US West's position in the case, many are predicting that if US West prevails, the company will be authorized to raise all Oregon BBS lines to business rates and try to raise rates for BBS lines in US West's remaining 13 states: Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.
The case started when Tony Wagner, Portland system operator of First Choice Communications BBS, received a letter from US West (Portland) in October 1991. In the letter, Communications Consultant Sandie Ouellette said "Bulletin board services are considered a business, therefore, subject to business rates."
Wagner filed a formal complaint against US West's reclassification from residence to business rates in October 1991. A hearing was held in December 1991. In January 1992 US West filed its opening brief (Docket UC #205) in defense of its reclassification actions. Wagner is being represented by Portland Attorney Kevin Myles and Wagner's brief is due by March 3, 1992. A date for a final decision is not yet known.
In the US West brief, Seattle US West attorney Steven Holmes made three arguments to support US West's actions:
A) US West's tariffs require BBS operators be charged business rates. Holmes summed up this argument with: "Mr. Wagner provides a service that he advertises as openly available; he receives and transmits voluminous calls and messages in which he takes no personal interest and which would be impossible for him to read; he carries programmers who advertise shareware; and he admits there is no effective way to police whether 'millions of users' are offering services for money. USWC can only conclude that Mr. Wagner's network use is not 'obviously domestic,' and must charge its business rates for Mr. Wagner's BBS lines."
In quantifying voluminous, Holmes cited caller statistics provided by Wagner. The number and average length of calls to Wagner's system adds up to an average of 32.6 hours a month or 4.5% of a 30-day month for each of the three lines.
The US West brief did not address the social use of BBSs under the tariffs. The Oregon definition of residence service, which is exactly the same as Washington state's definition, includes: "A class of service furnished to a residence or place of dwelling where the use is primarily social or domestic."
B) Mr. Wagner's position erodes the [Utility Commission's] obligation to set rates based partially on US West network use. Holmes claimed: "The voluminous amount of information that Mr. Wagner testified is carried through the network both by callers dialing in to his BBS and by callers leaving information to be retrieved by others is clearly not contemplated. Residence rates are therefore an improper vehicle for recovering the costs associated with Mr. Wagner's use of USWC's network."
C) Billing Mr. Wagner's BBS lines at business rates promotes the Oregon Legislature's goal of universal telephone service. Holmes stated: "To promote the Legislature's goal, basic residence service is billed at artificially low levels and subsidized by other services. . . . There is no evidence that the Legislature intended that BBS service providers should have their hobby subsidized by other rate payers."
Similar arguments are being made by Southwestern Bell in an attempt to charge business rates for BBSs in Missouri. One Seattle Attorney interested in telecommunications said these attempts by the phone companies to raise rates for BBSs are "just another attempt by the phone companies to swipe people's communication."

it's all part of that great conspiracy

hey, Twoflower, when are we gonna start netting.

Beo.... I believe you are referring to JoAnne and her talk of shirts and shorts in one piece.... to combat those nasty hemlines.
Monster Dog
V ya gotta get us online soon. I'm jonesin' for west-coast info.
Twoflower
Saphyre: I keep remembering that. How about next week I go through the room list you left and decide a few things. I don't have time now, and I won't be back until Monday or Tuesday.
Hard to ignore that article, as it was written by Bruce.
Captain James T Kirk
Heather, thanks... I'd seen that befor, but didn't know how it was done.
Saphyre
Sounds great Twoflower...I'll have time either Wed. or Thursday to fix my netting where necessary so that will work out well
Cave Bear
NetGridMaker, ad the following bbs as netting actively; Dreamscape Auburn, WA. running RoscoeCit 2400bps. Nets with Cave Bear's Laire. Sysops Paul & Kat. Please confirm. ...all right. Will strengthen the link this week. #route to Fred's Toy and whatever systems are most important to you through MOS, and I'll use Testbed and MOS to pull in whatever information you think is needed. Drop a line to Fred and whatever sysops you want to get news from for a list of their shareable rooms. Talk to you later...

Coolness, thanks v!

the phone companies do not care about us. they do not need us. they care only about :
1. money
2. appearing to do what is required by law.
Don't Ask
Note to all: WAI was experiencing some software-related problems over the weekend (namely, the room file screwed itself), and some messages may bounce because of the resetting I did. Please direct all letter bombs to me in care of Who Am I BBS... Sorry.

Yeah Centauri, but you're in Cali-alley and Heather is in Seattle weather. :)

to all concerned:
Slumberland is now netting with Thee Crossroads.
Little Nemo
weird. got a couple of messages doubling from thee crossroads. with a path slumberland!thee crossroads!slumberland. weird.
Saphyre
oh yeah...Shades is netting with Thee Crossroads also
Fred
Be careful Pat, the phone companies also want for us to not notice what they're doing. Look at how they implimented that last electronic communications tarrif. Lots of public response, mostly negative, then they waited about a year, then they did it, when we weren't looking. Nasty.
Doctor Dee
Yeah, I've gotten a couple of wierd ones too. To sysop from Shades of Blue... Let me know if any other wierdness occurs please.

Hey v, are we gonna start getting stuff from the nat'l net soon?
