Mary Ida Quist Malmin Family

Mary Ida married Sigvold Malmin in about 1891, according to the June 20, 1900 census. They lived at Grafton that year, in Ward 3. They were both 31 years of age, and he was a naturalized Norwegian, having come from there in 1888. He was a printer by trade, and they had 4 children: Bertha M. was 9, Maud Q. was 7, Louise A. was 5, and Sigvold was 2.

They were living in Sharon, Ward 1, Steele County, North Dakota on April 15, 1910. They had been married 20 years, and had 8 children. He was a newspaper publisher, age 41, and Mary Ida (or, Ida M.) was 40. The children, all born in North Dakota, were: Maude A., 17; Louise A., 15, and a newspaper typesetter; Ira S., 13; John S., 9; Helen R., 6; Lillian E., 4, and Richard R., 3.

Ira S. Malmin is recorded in the Roster of the Men and Women Who Served in the Army or Naval Service (Including the Marine Corps) of the United States or Its Allies From the State of North Dakota in the World War, 1917-1918,v. 3: Army # 45,962, born on July 28, 1897 at Grafton, of Norwegian-American parents. He was a laborer when he enlisted in Company A., 1^st Infantry of the North Dakota National Guard on May 19, 1917; he served to January 9, 1918, when he moved to Company A, 18^th Infantry until his discharge as a Private, 1^st Class at Fort Dodge on September 24, 1919.  He was overseas from December 15, 1917 to September 3, 1919, and was severely wounded on May 6, and again on July 18, 1918.  The unit took part in engagements and offensives at Aisne-Marne, Meuse-Argonne, Ansauville in the Lorraine, and Cantigny in Picardy.  He was cited on June 1, 1919 for gallant conduct and his self-sacrificing spirit displayed during the Battles of Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, and Meuse-Argonne.
